Why isn't skill respec priced like character respec?

If we want to say change our hairstyle it costs us a small amount of energy credits, but if we want to change a few skill points around it costs us 20000 Merits? Why can't the skill screen keep track of the total amount of skill point changes and just bill us for that? Maybe only removing points from skill should be charged as adding can be done later for free. This sounds like a simple change but would make the rather low amount of skill points we have a bit less restraining.

On a somewhat (but not very) related note, why are all the purple 'end' game traders only anti-proton when we really can't afford to use them? How about some Plasma or Tetryon purples? My ship is now all disruptor and I expect to see skies full of disruptor/phaser beams POST respec. Maybe if the max level was bumped to say RA9 we could afford the higher tier weapons. Either that or fix the weapons skill tree already.

Well.. you could read the patch notes or follow the link in the sticky at the top of the forum that explains the LTS stuff..

    but

Click Account at top right of web browser, in left column, click Group Memberships, then you can set yourself Blue.

As for the rest of your post.. about respecs.. the 20K merit points are for every respec you do after the free respec is done.

this prevents FOTD (Flavor of the day) rebuilds and makes people think about their skills vs their career path.

If you were looking to test builds by altering a few point here or a few points there, then you heed to test builds on Tribble (multiple builds will require several Copy / Delete on the Tribble Server) That way when you finalize on a build, you can set it on Live and not worry about it for next few weeks / months...

As for the Merit Points.. If I spend 2 hours online, I can rack up a bunch of Merit points..

B'Tran mission .. 3x explore missions + turning in the quest = 784 Merits.. then you can just farm missions in there until your Quest CD is over.. say 5 Missions for argument sake = 980 Merit + 784 Merit = 1764 Merit

in 30 min x 2 hours = 7056 Merit .... this would make respecs every 3 days.. that is if you really need to keep respeccing (and not testing on tribble).

    Just some hints for ya.

If I chose to change my hairstyle in real life, it would cost me 15 bucks, including a tip. If I chose to change my skills in real life, it would require hours of lecture and training, a massive amount of cash and/or government loans, and quite possibly bodily harm, depending on the skills I'd like to learn.

I wish each weapon type would have its own progression on the skill tree.

tier 2 you choose the weapon type ( all weapon types open to choose from ) increase in accuracy
tier 3 you can increase the damage
tier 4 you can increase crit chance
tier 5 you can choose crit severity

This is a game. Don't confuse it with real life.

I'll just buy my respecs in the C-Store (and, by the way, it costs less than a haircut).

You go ahead and buy your respecs with IRL money. I already have enough merit for three, and will never use them.

    Hi OP.

While 20k merits is quite a bit for a respec, the above poster is quite right. Pestalence probably has had the FOTD experience in other MMOs as I have. Also remember, that STO is a business. The developing company needs to keep you "paying and playing." Timesinks like gathering 20k merits for a respec is keeping you playing the game (and paying). Everyone wants to make their character as powerful and effective as possible which MMO companies count on.

If you are Admiral rank, you'll have 20k merits in no time, about a week as Pestalence suggested. At least we get a free one and if you want to shell out the cash for CP points, respect is also available that route.

    Good luck!

Do you really want PvP players that can change their skills more easily for just under a quid - just to mess with you?

    Because they want more money.

That's 99.9% of the reason they ADDED a cap to the system in the first place.

And I think we can all vouch for the fact that they released the game with significant portions unfinished, to win that bonus from Atari for "releasing on time"...

I'd be nicer, if for example, Admiral level exploration hadn't yielded Lieutenant-level data for the past, oh, entire retail life of the game. And I can't really blame them for wanting more money, I just think players get way too bored way too quickly. (Unless you're still not at max level, I suspect that's the actual best way to do it.) :p

I don't need to change my build every day, nor am I looking to reinvent myself. But training for another weapon type is not a huge deal and I should be able to make a change between zero and 20K. This is a career dead end as no change in my path is really possible with no place to go until the add some more levels.

Since we are in a dead end career wise why and that will be slow even when it moves once in a great while, why can't we fill the gaps trying out alternate builds? I really don't buy this make an alt logic. I can see having an alt for tactical, engineering, and science, but each officer should be able to train on other ship types while we are sitting around. I don;t mind the skill cap in principle, keeps the balance, but locking me into only being able to fly one ship type is just not right. Same with the weapons. I wouldn't even mind grinding out the merits for the change if I could save them in a template.

So, the fact that a vast majority of players will respec ONCE - as in, with their free respec - and can afford to purchase future respecs with merits somehow points to a cash grab? Wow, you guys are predictable.
