I have a good friend of mine who is very interested in playing STO. She was even going to buy the game without doing the trial run because of the security measures at her college. She lives on campus and everyone's internet goes through the school's router. The security they use scans every packet for viruses and they have also disabled P2P connections.
I have been told that the updater for STO uses a P2P connection and after the realese of season one my friend has given up on getting the game. So I guess my question here is: Can you download the updates for STO some other way?
The downloaded installer uses torrent. The patcher after it is loaded doesnt. The problem on universities is the ports. The game uses ports 7000-7500 so the university would have to allow those ports. The patcher uses port 7255 . Also the game uses a lot of small size packets streams that can be confused for p2p traffic so may get affected by any traffic management software.
SO your university network admin would need to be made aware of the game requirments. There is no other legal way to download the patches except by the launcher.
you could sneakernet a patched game from another pc to another to update it. (copy the hogg files)
