20K Starfleet merits for respec!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I don't mind having to use merits for respec. Most games will charge gold or something in game to get it. But, i do think 20k is a bit high. If you got more Starfleet merits for missions it might be ok.

If you want to earn ingame stuff to get a respec in most games it might take a day at the most to earn it.
20k Starfleet merits could take a weeks. Cryptic is it so high so ppl will drop more cash into the c-store? If so i feel you may be going a bit overboard trying to get more money out of ppl in the c-store.

Man, I don't know what games you guys play, but the only other MMO I pay for gives me 64 - 72 character slots before paying for more, and a TF I can run at three different levels to earn a free respec. Also, it major content upgrades are free, and have only have two paid expansions in its five year run. I pay for my son and eldest daughter to play WoW, but I rarely pay for content upgrades for them and make them work there arses off to get it. I understand this is IMO, but ya'll seem to be tripping hand over foot to hand money to these guys. HECK, three slots! I understand the logic that most games give you a slot per archetype per server, but really! Three slots! And so may others willing to pay for TWO more?! Ya'll seem to have more dollars then sense. And, yes, theat is an IMO.

well i think wow gives you aroun d8 slots per server, not sure where your getting your numbers from unless you play across a wide variety of servers and have found the limit somehow or something lol.

not sure what game has free respec from a "TF" or even sure what that is.

but respecs are expensive here i'll agree with that. at most respecs in wow cost 50g. that's an hour of quests/dailies at 70 in tbc, probably even less time in wotlk. ofc you can spend 1k g and have the option to switch between two specs at any time for free.

but then i compare to other mmo's with limited slots. in swg it was one per server and buying a second or third account was frowned upon and could lead to getting all your accounts banned(or so i've heard) ff11 cost an extra dollar PER MONTH beyond the first few slots. dunno how many slots you got though.

I don't play WoW. But yes, after four years on the other game, I have about 30 toon between level 50 (highest) - 40. 8 per server, except on the servers where I use my vet reward to get an extra slot.

Actually, in SWG, it was raised to 2 slots per server, max 8, when the NGE was released.
Having more than 1 account was perfectly fine with SOE, they make more money that way. I had 2 accounts, and would often duel log them. I have known players in SWG to have up to 8 accounts. (I only just recently ended my 5 year run there hehe)

And as to the OP, I totaly agree. respecs should not cost so much.

Respecs should not be takin lightly. Just be thankful you have a means to change your points allocations should you have made a mistake spending them. And its always nice to change things up from time to time. 20k merits per respec is a fair price, considering 2 free with the initial release and the patch the morning after.

    *hint hint*

copy over your toon(s) on Tribble and test all you want for Free

    Good day sir

It's really not that hard to earn merits...

It's pretty hard to earn 20K as RA5. Maybe 100 exploration missions (ie 300 maps).

Much easier to buy in c-store - costs as much as a burger.

Normally, when you get one at each rank, it will be much less of an issue.

Yes, C-Store is another way around it, only a couple of bucks.

But really, how many times you people have to respec at Admiral Level? A few times maybe?

Besides, you'll get it back, not much outside of training BOs and respecing that even takes Merits at cost. And you'll get it back in no time, as long as you keep doing the dailies.

He's talking about City of Heroes. CoH also rewards respecs and additional character slots in their veteran rewards system, I think it comes out to 2 respecs and one additional character slot per year.

Yes its so hard, that i can do 3 repsec right now and haven't even played for 1 week due to my work and still cant play for the weekend...

And i don't even have that much playtime.. my RA5 only has ~5days -> 120h

I would have even more merit if i wouldn't have wasted thoused of mertis on respecing my boffs constantly... :p

20k merits can be obtained ~20h, a week of playing the game... or 2 if your extra slow.

Wanna know about a community of very *vibrant and passionate PvPers*?

Try Guild Wars. Wanna know the price for respecs? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

I'm not saying take it to that extreme, but about an hour's worth of grinding ~400-500 Merits should be the limit of any respec costs. Not 20k!!?!

    Wow.

    Tac officer, 3 ship types.

What if i feel like playin in a escort one day for pvp and a sci ship the next?
Or a cuiser the 3rd day before i go back to escort?

How do people not realize this?

Every officer (class) has 3 ways to spec, healing/dps/tank, and 3 ship types to spec in. You really dont realize why people wanna do that? Really?

Edit: This is plainly a way Cryptic plans on making money off people that want variety (its the spice of life after all). To allow you to perform different roles but not respec is so 1990's.

Srsly.. wth what your telling me is, that you want to respec every time you change your ship... Tell me one mmo where you constantly respec when your switching your gear, hell it doesn'tt even have to be an mmo...

Usualy in any RPG you decide what role your playing and what route you take with that roll, thats it. Even good old diablo handel it that way.

And again, you can earn a respec in less then a week.

If you all are so worried about your merits, could someone tell me, what you actually do with them? I have 60000 and no idea for what i need them? Sure i can train my BOs, but for that i need a really small amount of merrits. With the respec option there is at least a use for them.
Also one evening with infected + the cure earns you ~1000 merits.

Sounds to me more like you need three separate characters. How long does it take to do a respec? How do you remember what values you want where every single time?

With three characters you log off and back on. Takes less than a minute. And if half way through a play session you decide you need to change roles, you don't have to go respec again.

You have three slots free. Take advantage of them, dude, and spend more time playing!

3 slots, sci eng and tac would fill them

And to the guy that asked, WoW allows you to change specs pretty much at will. Because they realized its more fun that way. Oh and Guild Wars. and im sure some other people would be happy to chime in with more. If theyre limiting the skill cap then they should have put in respecs so that people can actually try all the different combinations.

In other words, in MMO's these days, its rather commonplace. Name a newer MMO where u cant respec easily. I think youll find most of them allow it much easier. Cryptic uses this as a tool to sell more character slots.

PvP spec, PvE spec, tank spec, dps spec, buff spec. All 5 of those specs apply to all 3 officers using any of the ships (given, some are worse than others, but the option is there, which Cryptic did on purpose). ATM i can only use one of these specs per every 20 hrs of hard grinding? Ya, theyre just trying to sell stuff.

Edit: To answer your question, i remember it rather easily, its not even a tree reallly, certain skills everyone uses and u just want your ships version of, sci toons will be maxxing all the sci skills, eng maxing most the eng skills etc.

My sci officer is super easy, max everything in sci cept RA skills and tractor beams, first tier of eng, first tier of team skills, go on down the line for sci ships and dps increasing skills. And of course, every ship gets quantums and phasers.

Oh, and ground skills are for sissies ;p

Dont forget, WoW now even lets you have TWO specs you can switch between so you can have a spec you want and a 'Raid/pvp" spec. Many other games do allow respecs easier than this. Only ones off hand i can think of that dont are "Free to Play" mmo's that make their entire game around an item mall and sell the option there.
