Why else do I PLAY a MMO if not to continually evolve my character. Is there any way we can still get skillp[oints at a reduced rate or something, so we can continue to advance our characters?
1) The developers have said that the skill cap is a core mechanic and it is in to stay. So you're wasting your time complaining about it.
2) They've also said that they're probably going to be raising the Max Level in Season 2. (I'm guessing to RA 10, though that's strictly a guess on my part) However, with the increased level will come an increase in the skill cap.
Technically speaking, they could raise the cap by including ALL realistic flag ranks. Say you roll back all Rear Admirals to Commodores lvl 5. This way you have the following ranks to go with: Commodore, Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral, Admiral of the Fleet. Say you couple this with making it even harder to level up and you've risen the bar for everybody in the game.

The Devs say it so it is gospel, do not question it! Just a reminder, they lose the license if they don't succeed.
The skill system was designed to be capless, they did a quick fix, thank God for respecs but the system still smells horribly of the original design.
Revamp the skill point pooll to reflect a cap system.

Think about it ...
I thought something similar, but was interested to find out that there hasn't been a Commodore rank in Star Trek since TOS. Thus, presumably, the rank was merged into either Rear Admiral or Vice Admiral. As it stands now, if they were to add additional ranks to the game, the most logical choices would be as follows:
After Fleet Admiral, I don't possibly see what else they could add. There are already Ambassadors in the game, as a special title, so it kind of rules them out as a rank.
No cap at all would mean that every character would end up with all skills, and no one would have to make any hard choices. Meh.
However, I'd like to see a slight modification whereby you had the skill points required to reach your level, PLUS a pool of extra points. (So you would more points at RA5 you COULD spend, but no more points you HAVE to spend.)
I find it odd that they worked for two years + and at the last second change their mind and just impose a cap on a skill system that wasn't intended to be capped. How could it be a core mechanic if 90% of the game was done when they came up with the idea.
I don't understand their inability to make content challenging to a player with maxes skills. For one many of the skills only apply to certain ships and abilities and since many abilities are ship class specific, you can't utilize them all at once. If you are in a cruiser the fact that you have cruiser and escort captain skills makes no difference, only one is beneficial at a time. Similarly a lot of the skills only apply to higher level abilities, things all ships can't run'; like an escort cannot benefit from commander science skills.
I have a hard time seeing their problem, but there must be some reason behind it.
Yo, all of you that want the skill cap raised in order to collect more points and apply them.
WTH mission, episode, action are you going to use them for? For strolling thru the raidisodes like butter? Come on, think outside your grandious schemes of being the uber-elite-ultimate-maxxed-out-capped-out-all-epic-lewtz starship captain!

I want to be able to raise 2 or 3 T5 skills to max. That's not exactly an unreasonable request.

I don't think it is either and I agree with you that players should be able to have more points available for these. However, asking for the cap to be removed is not the route to go. It's not going to happen.
Personally, I think it is a much more reasonable approach to suggest that the branches for the specific ship types should be removed in their entirety. A captain is a captain is a captain. Kirk commanded the Enterprise, shuttlecraft, even a Klingon BoP for a while. I seriously doubt he or anyone in the crew had the skillpoints for that.
Taking out those areas of the tree devoted to specific ship types frees up points to be used elsewhere... like different damage types or later on for another 2 or 3 T5 skills. Hull points and turn rates should come from Engineering equipment, not skillpoints IMO.

I really like this idea. I hit Admiral 5 last week and was a little sad to find out that I had hit the career end so quickly. Don't get me wrong - I get that it had to happen someday, I just didn't think I could get there so quickly by soloing.
Another idea I would like to see implimented is that at Admiral, I could choose where all my hard earned skill points go (not that I can't really earn any for myself). For example - maybe my unusable skill points could be converted to points for my BO's. Maybe I could completely swap out merits for energy credits to go to my fleet. Maybe I could convert all my points into a way to purchase very high-end (and possibly expensive) rare (or maybe even customized) kits, weapons, etc.
How about letting me convert all my points into something crazy - like a way to purchase my own space station for me and my crew (an outpost on a planet that I might have discovered). I guess I'm just trying to make suggestions in order to allow Admirals to have motivation to keep on going, even at the level cap.
I'm still having a blast with the game, I would just love to continue on with my original character that I rolled (I've become a bit attached to him). Oh well - that's just my two cents on the subject...

Well, if they removed the skill cap, that'd be one sure to way to guarantee failure, unless it was also accompanied by a complete ground-up redesign of rather a lot of the entire game. Ask Sony how that works out for an MMO.
Some of these people poopsocked to 60,700 points in a week. They'd have 364,200 points by now. Cryptic could introduce 300 new levels of content and all those people would outlevel it in 2 minutes from spending all their banked skill points.
The skill cap will go up when there are all of the following:
1) More skills for people to spend the points on, so that everybody doesn't have the exact same list of skills.
2) More levels to progress through.
3) More content to fill those levels.

What they SHOULD have done is allowed Rear Admiral 10 to begin with. There is, frankly, no excuse for not allowing this. Rear Admiral 5 only allows you to max out one Rear Admiral skill. For most people, this is their ship skill, meaning that Antiproton and Polaron ship weapons are effectively inferior until the cap is increased. Had they even given us 6 or 7, we would have been able to max out our new energy weapons skills.

Exactly what Peregrine said. It's getting a little old seeing these skill cap threads popping up every couple of days. Cryptic is *NOT* going to be changing the skill cap without raising the level cap. Craig Zinkievich said it in an interview that they do not want people to max out their higher level skills, because it would allow plays to level instantly and skip through all the new content that would come with the new level cap.
And seeing how people on the forums have been complaining about the lack of content to begin with, raising the skill cap would only exacerbate THAT argument. Then people would say that Cryptic isn't doing enough at their jobs and should create even more content, or level band all content in the game, etc. It becomes an endless cycle.
And what's funny, ALL MMOs have skill caps. No one maxes out any high level skills in any game. Not even in World of Warcraft.
If you can't/don't like the skill cap, then MMOs aren't for you.
actually if you consider it - they have potential for more "ranks" of "Admiral" or "General" (For those Klingon characters) - I noticed they only used the lowest rank possible for those terms...so they might end up increasing it over the span of every Season after One.
- But this is my guess, I wouldn't worry about the cap until they say "It will never increase again"
All the rabid cap defenders are missing the point of this thread. Fine, keep the skill cap but fix the point distribution that was designed to be capless.
1) The developers have said that the skill cap is a core mechanic and it is in to stay. So you're wasting your time complaining about it.
The forums are full of wasted breath from people complaining about stuff that wont ever change. Does that stop em from complaining about it? Nope. Will it ever stop? probably not.

I really feel sorry for this dead horse... it's been beaten so many times, poor thing.
I say no to the skill cap - or increase the points earned to allow at least 3 maxed RA/BG 5 skills

This I agree wtih, as is, max out your T5 ship, and part of another T5, thats it. Kind of lame you ask me, raise the points another 7000 or so.

Folks, the cap is here to stay. Time to move on.
