The fact that it's customizable with the other Assault Cruisers makes it even THAT much better! I was not too fond of the standard neck and pylons that come with the Imperial Class, just swapping them out for parts from the other classes that feel more correct to me, and I now have what in my mind is the ultimatly proper looking Federation Battleship (not Dreadnought, just battleship).
Once you purchase it in your C-Store, head to the nearest ship yard with a customization NPC, and select the Imperial parts from the Advanced tab. There isn't a complete Imperial button in the simple interface yet, so you have to open the advanced tab to add the parts in. I love this ship and as far as I'm concerned will not need another ship for this character ever. Perfect! Cryptic, you're on my happy list right now
they should just have made it a new ship instead of a skin.
It basicly is just a 4th choice for Assault Cruiser, the name "skin" is applicable to all the ships within that tier group if you get technical. If your not being that technical though, and calling the Sovereign and Nobel classes seperate ships, then the Imperial is a new ship in every bit the same way. You can swap it's parts among the other Assault Cruisers just like the other ships of the tier group. What more do you want??? A new tier group? I don't think we're THAT far into the game yet (while I would love to see just that, I don't expect new ship tiers for as much as a year after launch.
Any mix of Sovereign, Nobel, Majestic, or Imperial you want to come up with, it's there to do. But in the sense Cryptic means skin, all of those are just skins within the Assault Cruiser class and not actual classes of their own.
I dont know what to make of it at the moment, but after playing with it over and over, I keep comming back to the clasic sov look for my ship.
And having just been able to change the windows on my sov after having the option to do so bugged out since the start, we come to the imperial class which now has that issue now too, That is if you use the main engineering hull componant of said class.
The imperial kinda looks like a dead mutilated platipus... just a bit :P

The more I see of that ship, the more I like it. Too bad it's a Tier 4. If it was a Tier 5, I'd make it my main ship on my cruiser alt.
It is? The FAQ has it listed as a 4th tier variant. I assumed it was due to some similarities to the Envoy. I might just buy it now.
That FAQ seemed to list the ships in a misleading manner. I saw that too and was worried until I checked it out.
My thought is that the dev may have meant "Type 4" instead of "Tier 4" as if you count all cruisers after the starter ship, and force the cruisers into a single column with Star Cruiser as Type 5 and Assault Cruiser as Type 4, then the FAQ makes more sense.
Comments
It is an additional skin for the T5 assault cruiser.

Zombie platipus!
Thanks for posting the link Geoduck, that's the first time i've gotten a decent look at it.
I have to say i'm not that impressed. It looks like a Star Destroyer threw up on a Sovereign.

It's an Assault Cruiser, RA5 level ship. One more tac console and one less sci then Star Cruiser is only real difference.

Example: Cruiser (Type 1) - Heavy Cruiser (Type 2) - Explore Cruiser (Type 3) - Assault Cruiser (Type 4) - Star Cruiser (Type 5)
That could be how they internally list the cruiser line? Light Cruiser wouldn't count since everybody starts with it and it would be (Type 0).
