Dialog Boxes Make PC Scream / Overheat

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I noticed whenever I open the Character Status dialog box, my video card starts screaming.
(has been like this before the update too)

There is something going on in that dialog box (and some other dialog boxes too, like Ship Selection) that drives the GPU into overdrive. As soon as I close them, the screaming stops and all is ok.

I have had "/maxfps 30" on since release, plus I am now running in minimum graphics and half resolution, just to be sure this is NOT a usual graphics problem. I tried other resolutions too and switching off the half rez. Otherwise I run in high graphics and all is well, its just when there is work to be done with these dialog boxes is when the screaming starts.

This might also be the reason of some people's overheating issues.
I think those Dialog Boxes also need their own "/maxfps 30" equivalent or something.

Interesting, the only thing I can think that might be related to is the headshot. Do other headshots cause issues (team display for example)?

Not sure, because it happens with the Ship Selection dialog box too.

And on the Character Status screen, I was mainly fiddling with the Ship equipment tab and after about 10-20 seconds it starts happening, if I just leave it as it is. Sooner if I try dragging something from the inventory into the ship's equipment area.

Just seem to be a general UI issue with dialog boxes.

I just verified now that the worst culprit in this is the Inventory window.

When I open the Charactsr Status on it's own, the video card fan only groans mildly
(I was misled before, because when I opened CharStatus window, the Inventory window also opened next to it automatically, so I blamed the Character Status window)

But in fact, when I open the Inventory window on its own (without the Character Status), the screaming starts.

This also happens in the "Fleet Window", but NOT in the "Captains Log and Mission Journal" window.

Also happens in the exchange -> bridge officers section. My fps drops to 15-20, and GPU temp rises +5-6 C degrees.

yeah searching for bridge officers makes a lot of lag

....you sure it's the video card? Ive had ONE game ever do this to me.

When I played Diablo 2 single player, the game would literally make something on my motherboard "chirp." I could ONLY play the game online. (Talk about wierd.)

    No, I have an ATI4800HD.
(with the latest March 24th driver, but this was happening since release too).

And this is not lag, this has something to do with how the graphics card is used when the Inventory Window (and the other windows I listed) is open.

It seems (sounds) like the "/maxfps 30" directive is just being ignored in those windows.

Actually... my "Spannungswandler" @ GTX 260 only starts screaming if something runs at very very high FPS... like 2000 FPS or so.
I limit everything i play to 60FPS with Vsync so i usually only hear the screaming when i install a new game that thinks it needs to put the 25FPS intro video on my screen with unlimited FPS.

The User Interface rather has parts that slow the FPS down to 30 (like the Char custumization window).

And honestly i cant understand how one would want to fix the FPS to 30, i couldn't play like that! 60 is what your TFT can do so put it on 60, if your card gets to hot then clean the cooler or replace it by something that can handle it.

    @OP:
if it happens with the inventory, does it also happen with the bank?
lots of small icons, should be about the same to display...
