Using Respec Points from lower tiers

I have not used my free respec yet because I wanted to know something: Is it possible and/or beneficial to take points allotted to Lt Cdr skills and apply it to Cdr skills? Specifically, taking all skill points that benefit piloting a light cruiser and apply them to the Cdr equivalent. I have no plans to ever refly my Lt Cdr ship, so I don't see the benefit of keeping the skil points in those categories if I don't have to.

What I didn't know was if I had to fill my light cruiser category before I could use the next tier up (whatever the cruiser category is for Cdr).

Just seems more beneficial to me to remove stuff that costs 200 skill points so I could apply it to stuff in the 300 categories. I thought I would ask before I used my free respec.

I hope someone understands what I am trying to say, and if it has been covered already I'm sorry for asking again but I had no idea what to search for. Thanks.

Just because you can respec, doesn't mean you can throw all of your points into higher rank tiers. You still need to spend the minimum number of skill points per rank to "unlock" the next rank's skills.

Also I have read somewhere that 25% of the lower ship skill will go on to help the higher ship skill, but cant remember where I read that.

You do need to spend your 6700 points. However it was either in release notes or engineering reports I believe that the lower tier will help out the higher tier by 25 percent.

Of course, you can lower your skill ranks in your ship skill, and raise another skill on the same tier. For example, the 3 new skills that were introduced with this update might be useful for you.

Silly question perhaps... But where and how do I find this respec token and use it?

you go to the skills trainer in the central hub of sol or Qu'nos and talk to them, you auto get the token.

    And be careful.

As I found out last night, you only get one free respec per account. Either its bugged or I misread the patchnotes, because I thought it said you'd get one free respec at each new rank per toon. But that isn't currently the case.

    One free respec per account.

So make sure you know which toon you want to use it on, and make sure you use it wisely. Otherwise you're gonna be spending SF Merits/C-Store Points to fix your character.

Not true ... each of my characters got a token for retrain.

So it is not one per account.

It's once per character because of the skill changes (the three additions).
You also get a "free" one when you rank up. If you haven't ranked up since that system went in, then you don't get the free ones. It was also mentioned -somewhere- that you can only have one free respec token at a time.

Only the free ones given out by the devs for the updates are limited to one. The ones we'll get each time we increase in Rank do stack, according to the release notes. (Whether they also stack with the free one, I don't know.)

Then it must be a bug, because only one of my characters received one. =/

Before you go and waste your free respec...

Go sign up for the test server, Tribble.

Then copy over the toon you plan on respec'ing, and do it there first. Then you can see what points you want shifted around, and how it'll pan out, before you commit on Holodeck.
