I remembered reading somewhere, at some point, that the DSSV's silly un-removable mission pod was getting an update so that they didnt look like a third nacelle... but I logged in again tonight only to find that they still look like nacelles.
Maybe they wouldnt look half as goofy if they were the mission pods from the sci recon ship. >.>

I guess "goofy" is in the eye of the beholder. I'm rather fond of the DSSV mission pods.
Yep your quite right... but for everyone that likes the thing, theres one or two more that dont it seems.
Im just stumped as to why recon ships can opt-out of the mission pod, yet DSVs cant.
Theoretically the answer to this is within the ship type itself.
A "recon" ship, in my opinion at least, CAN operate independetly for a while, but strikes me as a ship type that has to be reconfigurable within a relatively short time, depending on mission assignment. Also, those ships most often operate within "normal" flight range of a starbase.
A "deep space" ship on the other hand seems to be designed for long-term, well, deep space assignments without the immediate support of a starbase. Thus their mission pods are more complex and would probably require the ship to return to Utopia Planitia or any other major shipyard, if one would even consider removing the pod as a whole.
In other words: DSSV pods seem to be somewhat more integrated into the ship and it's systems, thus they seem to be a mandatory part of the ship.
... besides, at least the Trident would look quite ridiculous without it's pod, and the name would be less fitting.

To quote a sci-fi legend, "Indeed."
