Distances in STO

So can someone tell me what the units of measure mean in the game? On the surface of a planet it makes sense to measure distance in meters, but why is kilometers being used to measure distance in space? Apparently if a ship is 200 kilometers from you they are on the other side of a planet. Are these planets really no bigger than a small country on Earth? 'Moons' are probably about 5-10 km in diameter. Distances between star systems probably should have been in parsecs not light years (the galaxy is a lot bigger than a few hundred light years in diameter).

Sorry I'm just nitpicking, it doesn't really bother me, but the scale is a bit off in the game.

The scale of everything is off...way off in STO. Really, it's the most immersion breaking aspect of the game for me. It's like playing toontown in space.

The unit of measurement in STO is the "Quantum Hop".

The most unique property of the "Quantum Hop" being that it's actual length, height, width and duration, smell, color, frequency and temperature changes according to what is being measured.
