I have always pondered this: Why are some people so eager to have to use alts in a game? Would you not find the game more enjoyable if you could endlessly advance one character, over advancing several characters to a limit?
Only thing i can think of is most Games have limits, and many of these limits are easily reached, and therefor your are required to create an alt to multiply the limits you get with just one character. But is there any other reason?
Much like different states of your personality, alts are not all meant for the same exact thing.
I have a science main, engineering alt, tactical alt.
I could not have my main fly all ships as well as having alts could. Additionally, even if I could, I'd not have the fun of spending a good portion of time in any individual ship.
As well, I'd get extremely tired renaming my character, changing his outfit, changing all his appearances, hiring new bridge officers, naming them, designing them, and placing their skills accordingly if I stick to simply one character.
Additionally, have you ever played a game where you enjoyed one area of it moreso than others? I for one find the early+mid levels of STO to be much more entertaining than the later levels.
You'll find that people with alts play their alts differently than they do their mains. Think of it as someone with two cars, a mini-van and a sporty 2 seater. Many would prefer to have them seperate and treat them seperately. Nobody wants to drive a sporty mini-van.
A number for my part
1.Trying diffrent playstlyes, each type of charecter has there own style
2.Learning about other peoples classes which can be very important in group content
3.There can be useful side effects ie extra storage space
4.Also as you say games have a limited scope so it's one way to increase the amount of enjoyment you get from the game
I suppose it's slightly different everyone what there exact motivations are but those are some of mine.

Because I can
Why not?
To have some variety available should the need arise in teams
Would you not find the game more enjoyable if you could endlessly advance one character, over advancing several characters to a limit?
Nope. Nor do I really care if someone wants to make 1 character only and play that 1 character forever. If that's what makes them happy, more power to them. I don't begrudge them their fun.
But is there any other reason?
Yep. I like to make different characters. That is fun for me and having fun is what I personally am after in an MMO. I would not play it if I could make only 1 character. I have something like 50+ on CoX and they're all different.
When things get tough for my highest level, and I need a break from the stress, I switch to a lower level character I'm also working on, doing stuff I already know, and can do easier this time through.
Different builds also play differently, adding variety to the game.
I build characters to be specialists in different aspects of the game, and then play the one I'm feeling like that session. Sometimes I want to explore, sometimes I want to mess with the story arcs, and sometimes I just want to PVP.

i don't much like alts in most cases... when i use an alt it is either a) to access the other side (like my kdf character (only other alt i have ) or to be helpful..
like in another game i have i have a healer alt that i don't play much except when my faction/guild is doing an epic campaign and needs an extra healer
for this game i want to try a different career and see the different abilities that come with it for ground and space, to fly different types of star ships and try different weapons, abilities, tactics
its nice to replay some of the content again as i still find it fun and to do things differently that you might have done wrong the first time round
not to mention the teaming aspect often makes any mmo different every time you play it
A number of reasons. I always keep an alt or two at my wife's level so we can team, she doesn't play as much as I do. Plus I like trying different classes and builds. And on top of that, I get these ideas for characters, personality/background sketches and the like, that I just need to make a character for and play.

I doubt anyone has made 3 tactical officers and is leveling each one up the same exact tree.
I have a sci, eng and tac officer, each has different skills, ships, BO powers and play styles...
with the tactical officer, I am in your face...
With the engineer, I laugh as you try to destroy my shields.
as a science officer, I can heal and buff my team and debuff the enemy.
You can also mix & match your ships and officer
