Instead of simply bumping a ship up a tier, Ive been thinking it would add more interest to just bring up the Bridge Officer stations and number of devices and consoles to the next tier while leaving the weapons mounts and base hull stats alone.
This might serve two purposes. It would keep ship classes available earlier viable through the game without having them truly equal to newer ship classes, and secondarily provide a bit of an additional challenge to those who desire it as well as a bit of variety at endgame.
I hadn't considered that. I'd presumed that much of the motivation for wanting to keep a ship was, for many, to keep a favorite iconic one. For me, it's that and that the game-original classes have the look of a sci-fi illustrator's design rather than a draftsman's, model-maker's, or engineer's; too many swoopy-curvies and doodads and not enough Starfleet-style clean geometric solids.
however - if promoted- chances are you would get a bigger ship
I think more saucer shape choices at each tier would allieviate much of the problem
hybrid Escort, Science, Crusior shapes
but all in all the ships are pretty cool escpecially when you first start
Akira- 500 crew, 464.43 meters long, 17 decks is bigger and a more prominent command than the Defiant 40 crew, 170.6 meters long, 4 decks... Lt Cdr Worf was never a Captain...
I guess when your created to do the work of a Federation battleship, but stay small enough to not upstage the space station star of the show on camera... Oh wait it did.. but I digress...
I stayed in a Sabre for the Admiral T'nae missions in Romulan space, and then an Akira rather than a Captains. Made PvE a challenge, and had some interesting conversations in PvP...
