The Problem: There is NO WAY (from the point of view of an in game explanation) to justify how every officer in Starfleet is running around with crazy uniform designs and colours they have chosen themselves(I found the in game explanation of why we can pimp our ships to be a HUGE streach, but could live with it, but as I said, with uniforms their is NO in game justification.
A Proposed Solution: Maybe a future update could add a button to have the option of imposing your uniform over everyones character from your perspective only, so everyone can play with the illusion that their uniform is being worn by all of Starfleet. This would be an OPTION only- I would love it, my friend thinks its a terrible idea, i get some people would be against it but for those who find the 1000000 different costumes an immersion breaker this could be an answer.
Final Point- This is NOT a thread suggesting either ship or uniform modding are bad, just a suggestion as to how it could be made more immersion friiendly.:D
They have an in-game explanation for it (though it may not be adequate by your standards). Onew of the loading screens says that Starfleet updated it's uniform code to allow a variety of uniforms.
As for your suggestion, the devs have said that it would be pretty hard to do something like that. (they were referring to the shield bubbles at the time if I'm not mistaken)

wow, i guess i need to play some more as I dont think i have seen that particular loading screen yet- a noob revealed i guess:)
and yes i tend to find that explanation a bit weak- Starfleet is the military, exporatian and diplomatic focus of the most important alpha quadrant power- its best and brightest have better things to do than checking out their new silver trim custom made uniform in the mirror.
TBH, when I see all those guys running with their giant rifles and their shiny armor, it's sometimes hard to remember this is supposed to be Star Trek. A "unique uniform" option client-side would be nice, I don't know if it's hard to do though.

Agreed, the giant rifles do nothing for me either- i would have prefered using loads of different bits such as grips, sights, energy cells etc to make a custom phaser, so everyone can have their own loadout but they all still LOOK like standard phasers from the shows.

Its not that far fetched. In the TOS era, every ship's crew had thier own uniform insignia. Starfleet adopted Enterprise's out of respect for all they had done.

insignia is one thing- units in real armies today have their own insignia (personal fave is 101st screaming eagle), but letting every officer from ensign to admiral fully tailor their own uniform is completley beyond the realms of plausability- you cant tell me that the most sophisticated space exploration and military defence force in the history of mankind has a dress code that is a good deal softer than the girl scouts?
I agree with the uniform problem. Heck, we're supposedly officers in a military branch after all. However, fi they had gone with homogenous uniforms people would be screaming for the ability to customize them however they want. When you can't win for losing you might as well try to at least please the larger group.
but letting every officer from ensign to admiral fully tailor their own uniform is completley beyond the realms of plausability
Well then, stop thinking about it too hard. Consider yourself a member of a certain task force which has its own particular uniform in the same vein that different branches of the military have different uniforms. There could be a thousand other Starfleet officers running around out there with the same uniform (because they're in the same force) but you just happen to never see them. You didn't design the uniform you wear, you were assigned to wear it by your commanding officer (who designed it in-universe, you as a player are designing it after all, not the captain you play).
The more you're willing to roleplay away the answers the easier it gets...
I really wasn't expecting this to be anything other than more complaints. I think the OP's idea is a really good one. I'd love to see this implemented.
you people are upset over uniform choices? Not everyone in the military wears the same exact uniform. maybe dress uniforms but not for what they do for field work. why should starfleet be any different?
give the doctors and scientists open jackets and slacks for pants
give the engineers loads of pockets vests and cargo pants.
and tactical officers, crisp leather looking jackets and dress pants. or for some some nice body armor with the starfleet logo on it.
i like seeing variation in uniforms. i mean look at Troi she wore one of the most revealing outfits in trek for a long time. no one cared.....Except jellico? i think it was. but hes an TRIBBLE.

We hardly have any good costumes as it is even with all the item codes.. No housing at all to keep us occupied so character uniforms fills that gap. Heck my friends want more pinks made available theres no good bright pinks (or yellows for that matter)
Ok it's miltary so you could say have uniforms on away missions but relaxed in spacedocks or risa.
Just i dont want the game to turn into a TRIBBLE we all have to be the same look
To Thraxx- i think what gives my idea a bit of iron in its glove is that it would be optional- you clearly like the variety and thats cool, but for some players i think having a common uniform would build up the whole idea of being in a military/ peacekeeping armada and make things feel a bit more plausable.

I fully agree- lack of housing is an issue, it would give people a chance to go wild with custom stuff/ casual wear and then retern to duty in a more standard uniform, as it is without housing people are throwing all their creativity into uniforms, and some of the results are a sight to behold:eek:
It's a game, let people personalise themselves and express themselves without you wanting to paste over them with your design, whether they see it or not. I like variations.

I hope i have already made it clear that I was never proposing pasting over anyones creativity, everyone should be free to look however they want, I was just suggesting that some players might enjoy seeing the uniform they made being used by thousands of other officers and would appriciate a certain consistancy in what their virtual comrades are wearing- sorry if I did not express myself clearly.:)
At some point, the need for immersion and to be surrounded in your idea of what you think Star Trek is has to give way to the reality that this is a game, and perhaps more importantly, an MMO game, and that differences in attire and peoples' own customization preferences eventually trump your need to see everyone in the same uniform.
To allow you to force everyone else into your own uniforms is to begin creating walls between the community, enveloping players in their own little bubbles. This is not good news for an MMO.
Seeing multiple uniforms doesn't bother me at all, immersion-wise.

Actually, to quote a snippet of what i did say:

Which means, you having the option to choose what you see them wearing, without them seeing the change, they see what they have set. So i understood you completely.
What I was trying to say was I like what I see, even those bright black and white uniforms, or pink and velvet. Some are clever, few are the same. I'm a major trek fan, but hell, I enjoy seeing peoples creativity. I don't care about seeing everyone in a standard.
Who am I to assume I can make a better standard than anyone else? Even if they don't know I've set the game to have them all on my screen, have them in my uniform, I still don't think anyone of us has a better idea.
The better idea would be what is canon, but we're beyond that.
At some point people need to let their imagination fill in the immersion blanks and not worry about other people. (Not directing this at the OP just in general)

your moms immersion friendly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bring on the infraction...........
EDIT: clarity
There's a difference between a custom insignia and the bunch of Neelix-clones jumping everywhere and launching smokes in SB01.

In the words of Dean Vernon Wormer 'I hate those guys'

much obliged for the support

Canons broken, its an mmo, relax a -little-
I am sorely disappointed.
The real problem with uniforms:
We can't ever take them off
