I may regret this, but I think its time to vent .....
Well, I am now resigned to the fact that Cryptic's or should I say ATARI's development team are either
amateurs, or that they are incredibly short of staff. At the moment I think I will consider the latter.
On my second run through your game, using an alternate character, I have encountered SO MANY pre-existing bugs, that were first reported as far back as the open beta period.
Case in point.
A CORE mission (Commander level 1) called "Pre-emptive Strike" - Romulan.
One of the rewards is an OVERCHARGED PLASMA SNIPER rifle "CAPTAIN" level qualification
This should be "COMMANDER" level qualification.
This bug has been around since open beta. Yes it is a trivial bug, but it is an important bug to most
players, WHO WANT TO USE THE RIFLE WHEN THEY ARE COMMANDERS. But what is more laughable is how many people posted this bug on your so-called "bug reporting system", during "Headstart". That was .. what .. seven or eight weeks ago?
So my advice is that you rid yourself of the bug reporting system. It is an obvious waste of band-width and processing space. I mean you're not using it, so why have it.
Oh and the above? It's a trivial fix, people.
What is more to the point is that I have stopped using your bug reporting system. Why should I waste my time reporting a bug, when most of the bugs are not being fixed, or are being ignored. Only the game stopping, game crashing bugs appear to be the focus of your attention - which is fine. But these should have been solved in the first four weeks of production - meaning when your game went completely live!
So one can only assume that you are short of staff, and that you are not allowed to hire more staff from the "powers that be" above you.
If this is the case, then you might want to pass this on to the ATARI "powers that be" that their reputation is sinking fast as a gaming company that wants to be known for its "QUALITY". Atari is definitely NOT in the same league as "Blizzard/Vivendi's development teams" or Bioware's for that matter. Anyone else, please feel free to comment.
If there is one thing I love about Blizzard (whether you like/or play their games or not) is when they make a game, they do it right, or they don't do it at all. Their up-and-coming game "Starcraft II", or whatever the title will be called, has taken them at least 3 years of development - if not more.
Want to know another media company that does it right? Try Pixar. These guys can take up to 4 years to write a story-line for their movies. And last I heard or read .. all of their movies made money!
You people, meaning the ATARI executive, were given a gift!!! The "STAR TREK" genre! And you blew it bad!! And how this game could have been so much better from the get-go is just .. well .. depressing.
Sorry if I am rambling a bit, but I get sick and tired of mediocre performance and results.
Well Cryptic .. err sorry .. ATARI .. at least you didn't lie to your subscribers, like Mythic did.
Rofl, I still have that gun, think it works out better than some of the ones I have found since then so I always go back to it
I never attributed it as a bug and just assumed it was a higher level item. I was surprised but didn't feel the need to report it.
As to short of staff. What you have to think of is that from a programming viewpoint they may have a large group of people fixing bugs in the game. But they can only do so much so they prioritise. Perhaps they wiped the beta bugs off their list and concentrated on reports since the game went live. I mean, I have seen fixes occur without meaning to or bugs appear after a fix has been applied elsewhere.
I personally report every bug I see and note if it is merely cosmetic or game breaking to assist their prioritising. As a former bug fixer myself I am seeing this from both viewpoints and will do the best I can to assist them.
Same here. I kept it till I could use it and used it then.
Games always have bugs. Some bugs get fixed, some don't. Don't like it? Chuck your computer out the window and sit staring into the corner for eternity becuase you won't find ANYTHING in the world that is perfect. Even books contain typos and other TRIBBLE ups. Of course, staring in the corner isn't good either, because sooner or later you'll see bugs to. But at least if you're doing that, you're not being annoying on forums for kvetching about a universal truth.

I didn't realize it was a bug. I thought it was just incentive to make Captain. I believe you may be over-reacting.
