Admirals should command multiple ships... so let them

It's been a continuous source of irritation from beta on that we have admirals running around at the helm of starships. Certainly Naval admirals may command a flagship, but with rare exceptions they are in charge of a fleet of ships (though the quality and makeup of that fleet can vary widely depending on the time period and situation).

So here's a quick suggestion: when someone reaches the RA Cap, give them a second ship to command. In fact, give them their old Captain level ship. Let them staff it with its own set of bridge offices, include a captain, and let it follow along using AI just as your AI bridge officers accompany you on ground runs.

Later, as the level cap is raised, admirals could be allowed to buy and staff additional ships, and to buy ships of different types. A Vice Admiral could end up sailing into a system at the head of a small flotilla of vessels, from nimble escorts to supportive science ships. A few simple commands would be all it would take to launch these ships into action while they use their own special abilities as the AI dictates, again just as the officers do on the ground.

That would be cool, just wouldn't good in pvp though.

Why not in PvP? Groups of admirals squaring off would become small fleet actions on their own, with each admiral directly driving their flagship while the rest of the vessels under their command helped out. Again, just as with ground action you could see the AI command vessels taking on each other, or direct your ships to help with your target.

Because 10v10 in a pvp match would just be too much. Might as well be 50v50. Also if you thought a single klingon ship uncloaking off in your blind spot and unloading was bad imagine a fleet of 50 doing that. That is something I *NEVER* want to see. Also before an idea like this would even be considered giving thought to they should have a look at thier AI that controls npcs. If your BO's get stuck in doors and on boxes just think of what happens when you have to command 5 other ships and they get stuck on astroids =)

Its a nice idea but I just dont see how it would work, all I can see is how it would be horribly abused, or broken.

Well first off, the advantage would go to the person with the most credits to purchase all those ships and upgrades, not to mention they would have to limit those battle to like 1 admiral vs 1 or they would have to create really huge battle areas to accommodate all of those ships. That also might stop it from happening at all. Can you imagine going to earth space dock not being able to get anywhere close to it becuase of all the npc ships hanging around.

Or just adjust ranks so that Captain is the highest rank and leave Admiral for leaders of a fleet.

Perhaps they could not bring the NPC ships to space dock. Your BO's dont follow you to a space station, so why would the ships need to follow you. Although I agree with the aforementioned AI problems. If that was fixed, and a way you could implement this in then heck yes. This would be amazing, but I think I want some other things done first such as the episodic content and what not.

I think this idea is getting unfairly treated - plently of games have pets, as do our current sci vessels and Klink carriers, and frankly our BOs in ground combat. I see no harm in giving admirals the equivalent of a pet in space - it's quite a good future dev idea to add some realism to the level...you could even let your BOs command other ships in future skill cap increases.

So..good idea here, maybe not immediately practical to be deployed, but shouldn't be talked down.

Add a couple of ranks, still keep admiral as the top rank, and allow the ability to summon two npc ships (or just one for now), but make it have a very long cool down. I like this idea, but then it would be a good idea to make the admiral rank incredibly hard to get to. I like my admiral I like my rank, and I would also like to eventually have Admiral uniforms (from TOS and beyond) available. I do not like the idea of demoting all of us and then barring us from the rank because we have a bunch of paltry Rear Admirals. As an alternative allow people to change the name of their rank, (the rank the npcs refer to you as) along with title. And everyone will be happy. Well almost everyone. If I were to take advantage of this, the most I would change my rank to would be Commodore, and that should be an available rank (Commodore Decker). I do not want to be stuck at captain.

Additionally many people throughout the series made it to the center seat (and actual captain rank) doing only a fraction of what we did in the main campaign in STO. Looking at that perspective most of us should be Grand Admiral of the entire universe by now, and, we are still outranked by the rest of the Admiralty, and by extension their cronies who are lower ranked than us, so oh well. I still play Star Trek Armada, so it is nice to sort of think that my Admiral rank applies there as well. :D

I love this idea. I suggested it weeks ago, it would be great if it actually happened. I'd be happy if you could use multiple ships for certain missions even before you make Admiral. It would make those lower tier ships actually useful later in the game.
