So I installed a new ATI 5770 video card because I was originally on an ATI 4350 with poor framerates playing the game. Let me first start off on that with the graphics maxed out, this game looks truly AMAZING. I can't believe what I was missing in terms of detail!
However I ran into a slight problem with having max quality. It's not a game breaker but I'm wondering if it has something to do with the game engine and how it talks to the card. Space combat was excellent, no flaws and averaging 75-90+ fps when using the /showfps 1 command. However, when in ground instances, even though my fps was registering 50-60+ fps, the game would "jump" periodically and eventually crashed the client. Was almost like what I would expect to see with lag. I wasn't rubberbanding, just occasionally "jumping" to where my character should be at. After playing with the settings a little bit, I found the only problem was the real time shadows. When I set it to Low, the problem went away. I've not since had the problem and though it's not a huge issue, I wouldn't mind being able to use the real-time shadows.
For reference, I used the idiot slider and set it all the way to Quality. Also, I have the most up-to-date drivers from ATI's website.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is this something related to ATI vs nVidia?
