I have a fairly good computer, I have played many Games and MMOs on it and always run things on High and have never had issues. 6 Gigs of ddr3 ram, 4850 ATI card
Age of Conan for example has better graphics then this game and never an issue.
But 5 minutes into playing this game, there Is a loud squeal that comes out of my computer, and it goes on and off, as soon as I turn the game off the noise stops.
Now as I said I could list 12 games I have played in the last year with never a problem.
So, I am curious if anyone else as had this issue?
i have the same issue here. About every other patch they seem to unbalance the graphic settings. Before this patch all was quiet. The one before was loud. And now this recent one is creating loud fan noise too. I traced the noise to my graphic cards. I took them out and cleaned them well, still have the noise. Its an issue with the graphic engine. The same problem was happening with Champions Online. Basically cryptic doesn't seem to be putting the effort into the game engine that it needs. They seem to be alternating from content to engine stability with each patch. Like "add more content then fix the engine imbalance on next patch". Only problem is how are you going to get cryptic to pay for a new video card or 2 when they eventually burn them out?
I'm sitting with 2xnvidia GTX280 sli and i still have fan issues too.
I noticed last night that my cards fans incresed some during one instance I was playing in so I alt+tab out and check the speed fan temp...one card was at 172F and the other was 168F...I was like wow...I eventually had to go through and do some video adjustments (again).

a few more degrees and you can boil water... or melt the plastic supports on your card, careful there, and if you see a blue screen soon you will know why. I don't think i've seen temps like that on a video card before. You might even want to contact your card manufacturer and see what is normal for high temps.
Yeah thats a problem. People are going to burn on their cards and not even know its because of this game.
Not so big for me since I dont like this game so wont be playing it, but, it would suck big time if i liked it cause, no way i am buring viedo cards to play a game
There is a report somewhere of Nvidia drivers causing cards to burn out, a new rekease has sorted this.
If you have Nvidia cards might be wirth checking there site/
If you check the technical forums you can find many threads about driver issues regarding new drivers using bad fan speed control. Seems so that both, Nvidia and ATI, have problems with this feature. AFAIK best workaround for now is to not use newest drivers but the last one.
i have the latest drivers. they worked to quiet the last patch. then cryptic released another and the noise came back. No new drivers from Nvidia yet....
Ok guys the squeal you are hearing is from either a capacitor or choke on your motherboard / Power Supply or Graphics card. This does not mean there is a problem as many parts will make this noise under load. This in no way will damage your card. I suggest downloading ATi tool and running the 3d image i bet you, you will hear the same noise. This is normal and should not be worried about. In some rare cases if it is a capacitor it can be a fault and cause hardware failure. But this should be nothing to worry about.

thanks for the reply but I am not buying that one. I have never heard a loud squeal in any of my puters and no thats not a normal sound, and we are going to back to 2000.
Video cards are not made to make loud squealing sounds. And as i said, Games with more graphic demands then this one, I dont hear a sound.
Has nothing to say as long as you not specify what other games you play. If you e.g. have only played games with low power consumption and STO is your first game with high power consumption then it's no wonder.
I know that Vanguard is a very power consuming game because all components have to work hard for running that game. I think EQ2 and AoC have middle power consumption and WoW has low power consumption.
No way a game could cause this, if that was the case everyone would be having this issue which is not the case at all. Either way it is not posible for a game to blow out a video card. If those other games you talk about do not make it do this then those other games are not as demanding as this game is.
Ok well considering fixing and building computers is my job and has been for some 15 years. I would guess i know what i am talking about. The 8800GTX had this problem and its well known. The ATi 5850 and 5970 have this problem. Try using google people before sprouting your mouth off on a subject you have no clue about. you don't want to by the information i am giving you then that is fine. But don't insult my intelligence with " I DON'T BY THAT ONE". Capacitor and Choke noise is very common and yes a game can cause the issue. Don't believe me ??? Google ATi Tool and run the 3d Image i bet you hear a squeal.

on my ATI 4600 I'm useing the drivers it came with instead of updating them. my card reaches 80c-90c in temp. Not sure how high the card can go but Im use to 65c-70c in WoW or eve.

Yeah..I ended up pulling one of the SLI cards out (a backup card now) and the other card has alot of space around it now so plenty of airflow. Nividia website stated the top for the GTS 240 card was 220F...it is 133 constant out of game and 147F constant now in game with most of the grphics on low. Hot card even with the 195.62 driver set.
I cant wait for another video fix. Definetly something with the Nividia drivers and I'm glad I didnt install the last set of drivers pulled by Nividia for the cooling fan issue.

Oh one of them i fix computers so i know it all kind of guys.
This game makes the ATI 4850 heat up to the point of it squealing,,,no other game I play does that. There is another thread where i guy is saying the same thing.
Thats not normal, master computer guy. Thats not healthy for a video card, you dont have to be a computer scientist to know that. A video card should not heat up so much.
as for why does not everyone have this complaint? Peoples cards may be over heating and them not know it, each card and peeps confiq are different, it could be over heating and not making a noice, a certain amount of people could have crash to blue screen and not know the cause,,,

THATS WHY I AM MAKING THIS THREAD!
Or your video card is the problem. Thats the more likely problem, not the game since only a few have this issue.
This can also be adjusted if you enable the "Advanced Options" from the Options->Video tab.
Then scroll down to Troubleshooting, expand it and select "30" from the dropdown listbox.

Sounds to me like your graphics card is on its way out. I had a the same problem awhile back and finally because i left it i had to buy a new one. I may be wrong and it maybe something else but from my own past experience i would get it into a shop before your looking at blue screen and that can be hell.
Video card squeal is a symptom of a phenomenon known as inductor or capacitor ringing or squealing. A capacitor under heavy load can produce a high pitched sound, due to vibration of high frequency changes. An inductor can do the same. Crappy power from your PC's power supply (e.g. not a proper sine wave or a well damped equivalent) can also cause this. Capacitors can also do so before they fail, but a squeal is not a direct indicator of failure (i.e. you can have one without the other).
Importantly, check your Nvidia driver settings if your card is Nvidia, as 196 iterations of drivers at this time have highlighted issues with fan speed & clock control which could cause overheating or squealing. If you have those, I'd recommend trying the 197 versions.
You want to check what your video settings are in STO specifically. If you have vertical sync turned off, turn it on. Alternatively use the \maxfps command to set your fps, and use /showfps to see what your card is doing. If you have heavy shadows turned on, try turning those off (they really cause the card to work hard compared to the other settings).
Please note that you will never see frames above the refresh rate of your monitor (particularly if an LCD) so if your refresh rate is 60Hz, you will gain little or no benefit from anything above 60 fps (this has nothing to do with your eyes and everything to do with how draw buffers work).
Edit: Note that in some cases, a ringing video card is sufficient justification for a Return to Manufacturer Authorisation, as a card 'working perfectly' should not ring (though as everyone knows, perfect electronics is a myth).
He's actually completely correct. Any electronics engineer worth their salt will confirm the above to be the case; electronics can and does produce sounds especially when exposed to high frequencies, of which a PC has in spades; these can be perfectly normal, or an indication of failure.

Thats not what I was referring too
Although looking back I can see why you would see it like that.

Aslo, i have the lastest drivers and i use ATI not nivda

Fixed my squealing PC.
