I have never played a game with less player to player interaction then STO. I love the game and play it every day, but it feels like a single player game. Instince after instance not a word its kind of disconcerting. Im not in a fleet, but I have had lots of fun with players I just met in many games. I dont know, it just bothers me. Im not sure of the reason, maybe players dont need much help from others players in thid game its kind of depressing because I love the game I just dont have a connection.

You got to break the ice, no use staying silent because the others do. Say hello when entering, and goodbye when leaving a mission. That's a start. :)

This feels so litle like a single player it is shocking.
I don't understand what the problem with instnaces is, because game developers have always had a choice either
    1) Make the game nice and customizeable and have "zones" and instances or
    2) Have pacman graphics and you can walk for miles.
I am not in a fleet because I am apart of the KDF and we don't "fleet" but I find the opposite: Too many people are around. They kind of irritate me.

I agree. Even when I make efforts to chat, others seem annoyed that I'm taking too long to engage the enemy. Come to think of it... even reading the mission prompts annoy other players.

I am big on XBOX live. STO is PC. I am in a fleet. There are sometimes people to talk to. But If were not the same rank we dont group up. The game is a lot more fun while talking to other people. No to mention the advantage in PVP being able to coordinate attacks. That would truly be fun. It would not be hard at all to have a seperate chat server for STO. You just log onto it seperately. I would take the time to talk with others if they would.

Oh! and I forgot to mention the Fleet uses a voice chat server. Which is the only way to go. You cannot type while palying. That is time consuming. Real time voice is the only way to go!

Yea, I can see how if people are i n voice chat they might not respond. When Im in an instance with two or more players and they dont respond the first thing I do is check to see if there in the same fleet that explains alot i guess. Maybe im just to sensitive I dont know, I just like it when you see another player in the same are and you ask what quest you working on and team up for a few quests. Might never see them again but alot of times you chat and complet quests and maybe exchange items that you dont need. Its still a good game.

The pacing of space combat and how the controls work do disincline folks towards chatting. I had the same problem with Pirates of the Burning Sea myself. Just gotta find opportunities to talk, and take them when appropriate. It is rather humbling though.

I actually prefer the less talking...UNTIL you get into fleet/raid instance. The silence is deafening! In other MMO's we have always talked. "How do you want to handle this?" "Who's Gunna Tank?". For whatever reason, people sit there staring at each other waiting for someone else to make the first move. Not sure why it's that way in STO. As it doesn't play like a traditional MMO, I'm thinking there are a lot of players who are new to MMO's, but like Star Trek and picked up the game, but the game doesn't do a whole lot in teaching the aspects of it. The couple other game I played sort of lead you down the garden path of understanding how to play in an MMO.

What REALLY ticked me off was the manual. It's a pamphlet...not a manual. This style of manual is ok for say, a shooter, because nobody reads those manuals. There is a lot to learn about STO and Cryptic should have been in front leading the way of understanding.

It kinda depends on the settings for the voice chat. You can have push to talk or real time open mic. Which works OK as long as everyone is using a headset. Then background noise from the game is not a factor. It works really nice if you do it right. All they have to do is talk in real time. I can talk and play at the same time. Some people already PVP and coordinate this way. You just have to turn it into an advantage.

Imagine doing PVP match after match with the same team. Each time you get better and better. You can tweek teamwork much faster if you can communicate in real time. Once you know your teamates strengths and weaknesses, you then decide who heals and tanks etc.

I've never been too big on trying to type during combat. I do use Voice from time to time to coordinate w/ team mates while doing "Infected" but other than that if I am in combat I tend to concentrate on what ability I have to use and who is flanking me, lol. DS9, Earth Space dock, Vulcan and Risa would seem like the more ideal places to socialize though.

Strange. I found those two games the absolute easiest to chat in during combat due to the combat pacing. All the time in the world to type between salvos.

I take the approach of if someone wants to talk to me they will and if they don't they won't.

Yeah, a lot of people either don't know how to use the chat channels or just don't care to.

I say my greetings every time I enter into a team, whether it be Open Instanced or invited. Some people respond, but many others do not. They simply charge off into battle or run off to snatch up all of the anomalies.

I think one thing that might help would be if Cryptic added Auto Channel Switching whenever you join a team. I think if player's were automatically in the proper channel to talk to a team they might be more inclined to.

Another thing that could help is adding a default Team chat tab that contained only the Team, Tell, Local and Friend channels. It helps a lot if you can communicate without all of the System, Reward and Zone chatter pushing everything off the screen. I make such a tab for all of my characters, but most players don't even know how to do that. It would just be more user friendly if it was a default.

I don't know whats up with you kids and the "cell phone culture". Back in my day we talked when we had something to say, not drone on and on about how the goth wanna be, screwed up your morning "double, nonfat, soy, Crappuccino".

Jokes aside, I'll chat when the conversation isn't "CE is bugged" (learn to play), or "wookies would be cool as a faction".

Heck I'm dreading Caitians being added and the general chat afterwords. "No, I don't want to cyber!"

If you want to talk, make it a conversation, not meaningless patter. During missions, you should know you're place/role, no need for anything but "conversation". (Please note, instructing a newer player(s) is never "patter" and has it's place.)

Also, there is no difference in the chat patterns in this game than any other I've played (IMHO). Chatty Kathy's and Silent Bob's exist in both.

If you want more "talk", speak "Trek".

Maybe voice chat has become too common in gaming?

I've never caught onto the whole "voice chat" thing. I played games back when typing was the way to go, and I haven't run into a situation where you couldn't just type out what you had to say. Or ideally you explain what has to be done prior to the situation, instead of like, "Oh yeah by the way, you have to do THIS at this part..."

the lack of interaction for PvP is simple....the tier/rank segregation means the minute you develop a connection with someone, they are lost to the next tier....bond broken, the usefulness of building relationships down the tube.

It amazes me that even Fleets/Guilds can survive this type of destructive effect on relationships. This game really does encourage solitary play. Now, all that being said, Star Trek has always been a solitary existance for the crews, with intermitent group interaction(especially during war time).

But when Starfleet or the Klingons needed to connect, relate and operate as a group, it happened and happened well. But in STO the sense of connection isnt there, because the lack of a true orginization the only thing we have like that is the the friends we make...friends and relationships that are strained before they even start.

The strongest bond I have in game is with someone I've may have only played in PvE and a few Borg Hunts together...after that, we've never been in the same tier at the same time sense.

The other few guys I had built relationships with in PvP also fell away after a couple of weekends...cant ever team with them sense we are segregated,

Friends and group interaction would increase dramatically if we ever got objective based, open PvP within a dynamic war campaign. It wouldnt matter what tier everyone was...instead, you'd just find, go to and participate in the PvP with them the best you could. Your contribution to the group would always be allowed and welcomed, instead of used as a reason to break you all up.

I've been in situations where I'm auto-teamed, I say "Hi", and the other person(s) can't be bothered to respond. These are usually the people who hang back and let me take the brunt of damage (I guess so they can leech XP and ninja loot during the time I'm recovering from having my ship blown up beneath me).

It's also disconcerting when you expect someone to be right behind you *helping* to overcome the waves and waves of enemy ships ... only to realize (usually after coming back after your ship's destruction) that the other person(s) simply left in the middle of combat without saying a word.

At least in PotBS we had the emotes to wave and tip-hat etc. to other Captains as we pass them on the map. I've developed quite a few relationships with other players as that worked as an ice-breaker for chatting.

Lol. Rather harsh punishment for only saying one chauvinistic comment. I have not even warmed up yet about how the biggest mistake in starfleet was letting women in and how they all should be planet-side barefoot, making men their replicated meals. ;)
