I was just wondering if being a Science Officer makes you only use science type class vessels or can you use escort type ships if you choose?

any ship you want, regardless of class (as long as it's part of your faction of course).

But something of note is that if you are a science officer in a cruiser or escort you won't be able to train your bridge officers in anything they can use because everything you train is LC or Commander level and you can't use that high up of science skills in the other ships.

Classes are most effective in their own ships, but any officer in any ship can still be very effective.

I'm an engineer and I won't touch cruisers. Any BO skills I have wanted I've been able to trade unassigned Bridge Officers with people to get so there is very very little reason to not fly the ships you want. Just cause you can't train a rank 3 skill to your BO's doesn't mean you can't find a BO that has that skill to train, or replace yours.

I believe people should try all three ship classes to find the one they like the best.
