Here is a chart of skill point spent verses points gained in STO, it should help you guys plan out your respecs better. For example if you look at the chart it actually makes more sense to spend points on LT and Commander skills than an any order rank. And it makes more sense to have 9 points in a LT skill then 2 points in a Captain Skill..

STO Skills Spend Efficency
LVL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Could you put that into english please? lol

Edit: Thanks for clarification. The post began as nothing more than the chart itself. It was a bit overwhelming.

What he is saying is that if you spend 4500 pts to max out an admiral skill, you get +52 to that trait, or .01156 pts/trait...

What he fails to point out is that the later parts of the admiral tier cost more than the earlier parts.

    i.e. 500 points for +4 to a trait at 6, 7, 8, and 9 which is 0.8% as opposed to +6 to a trait for 3, 4, 5 which is 1.2%

    but, compared to COM, where it is +4 to a trait for 6, 7, 8, and 9 which is 1.3% and +6 to a trait for 3, 4, 5 which is 2%

Nice. Would benefit from being exported as an image or google docs spreadsheet though. Pretty sure you can make those public to view.

In any case, thanks for summing things up.
