Storyline missions are the best for the most XP, with exploration and defend the sector missions good for some XP but better for the badges that allow you to buy better equipment.
hang in there though, the game gets faster as your get out of being a LT.
For me, I use Story Missions for leveling, Patrol Sector Missions for filler, Explore Missions for equipment and only do Defend Missions when bored of the other types. Finally I use PvP instances for fun while travelling (join the queue while travelling - takes longer to get somewhere but you've been in constant content along the way!).
Step 1: get in ship
Step 2: Go to mission
Step 3: Spam spacebar till everythings dead. In the case of ground spam buttons 1&2 possibly 3, never 4
though.
Step 4: Hail starfleet after mission
Step 5: Profit
Keep repeating these steps and you will level in no time!
all joking aside its very easy to level in this game, you are correct however the first 1-11 levels are a pain in the butt, but after that it gets easy. It really SHOULD be the other way around.
