What is best type of Monitor for Star Trek Online

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I was wondering what type of monitors people are using to play Star Trek Online. I have a 19 inch monitor (non Widescreen) and I am starting to experience crowding on the screen.

I am thinking of purchasing a new monitor.

I would like to know monitor do you use to play Star Trek Online and how do you find the GUI on screen.

Also, any screenshots (with GUI) of the different screen sizes would be appreciated if anyone has them.

Thank you very much :)

I also use a 22inch widescreen, 1680x1050. I think it's a nice compromise in terms of resolution and aspect ratio. I sometimes play older games as well, which don't support widescreen resolutions, and running at 1024 x 768 isn't too bad on a 16:10 screen. I'm not sure how it'd look on a 16:9, but I suspect the stretching would be much more noticeable.

As for the resolution, It depends on how fast your PC is but the higher the screen resolution the lower your framerate is going to be, so if you currently have a 19 inch screen and a mid-range PC I wouldn't upgrade to a huge screen (24 inch+) unless you plan to upgrade the PC as well. I generally find 1680x1050 quite comfortable in terms of text and UI size and it seems to be quite a popular resolution among widescreen owners, so there's plenty of support for it. :)

Biggest issue is your video card. If it can't handle higher resolution that may be the problem with your GUI elements.

I have a pair of 22" Dell displays each running at 1600x1200 (4:3). With my Video card I can run the game at full 1600x1200 on one monitor with everything set to Max and I get a pretty constant 60fps (which is the max refresh rate for the monitors so it is very good.) I love the look of the game at that resolution and the interface isn't an issue for me.

Wide screen would have the advantage of putting some stuff further off to the side, but wouldn't be any better if you are only running at something like 1024x768 resolution anyway.

Oh, here is a link to a screenshot, although I don't know if you can see it in full resolution: Flickr

Got an old LG 32 inch widescreen LCD Tv linked from PC HDMI to TV DVI. Works a treat - but had to slightly rearrang HUD.

Also got HDMI link to Onkyo reciever and passed to projector so I can play (occasionally) on a 2.5 mtr wide screen - looks awesome and sounds great - even tough just to reciever via pc phones out!

I usually run at 1024*768 as a standard (though can handle higher) and have my framerate deliberately throttled to 60 FPS.

The current restrictions I have imposed are due to issues with Nvidia drivers / video cards that need to be sorted before I go back to higher settings.

If you can get hold of an old LCD, such as the one I use, you may find it great - or not - I like it! Just remember, a lot depends on your GFX card and CPU. :)

2 x 24" Samsung monitors running at 1920x1200 for everyday play (with a 28" LG 1080p LCD for Blu-rays next to them). 5.1 surround sound and ambilight system for throwing those game colours all over the walls.

40" Samsung LCD downstairs for silly times (but mostly for the PS3 and Sky HD)

Best screen for playing STO on? One of the 24" monitors - best colours, sharpest picture.

If you want to upgrade your monitor, make sure your PC can handle the increased resolution. List your specs and we can give you an idea of what it can handle :)

Sure your moniter may be bigger and have a faster response time, but can it display over 16.7 million colours much less 1 billion? lol.

At any rate, think the gui for STO is scalable so wouldn't really matter what size moniter you get. But generally the higher your res, the smaller the gui would seem. At any rate, anything from 21-24" is decently cheap and will get you up to 1920x1080 (just not on the 21s or 22s). Anything over that can get increasingly expensive. Large format displays are not recommneded if you're looking to decrease cluttering since their supported res are generally abysmal.

No matter what, go wide, and try to go as high-rez as you can. My preference is 1920x1080 (or 1200 depending on the monitor)
You can pick up a 20-22" widescreen for very reasonable prices these days. Newegg or tigerdirect are great online retailers. I'd start there.
