My Preorder "Bonus"

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I can no longer find the page that details the specifics of preorder bonuses (they probably took it down by now), so I can't back up what I'm going to claim but I got the Wal-Mart edition because it came with 500 Bonus Skill Points. The wording of the bonus made it sound like they were 500 skill points in addition to the normal amount of skill points. Since this is not the case, I don't have any preorder edge, and had I known that beforehand, would have went with another edition.

Some stores are still offering their exclusives, but I don't want to pay $50 for one or 2 in game items (the 30 days free is useless to me since I have a lifetime sub). Would be nice to possibly buy the red matter capacitor, or that passive 360 degree defense system for a couple of dollars from the C-Store.

You did get 500 skill points. As soon as you made your captain. They don't give you 500 skill points over the cap. They give you 500 skill points to spend at the start of the game.

OP, the wording of the Walmart Preorder Bonus was not done in any way to sound as though you'd get more points after the cap. You got 500 SP in the beginning of the game, putting you 500 SP closer to the cap. That is all.

    Didn't everyone get 500 CP's?

Don't feel so bad. Most preorder bonuses are useless later on in the game anyways. :o

The bonus was skill points for your character, not cryptic points for the C-store.

So thats a no, either way. I know I didn't receive any C-points with my preorder. I did have 400 left over from my Champions Online preorder though, on top of the 140 (was it?) from the poll.

240 for the survey, at least for STO.

I know what the OP was saying. I considered getting the Wal Mart version for that very reason. It was worded to where it was very leading towards 500 skill points + the normal skill points.

Once again, I lay this misunderstand at the feet of the marketing team. Who ever is doing the marketing for Cryptic or Atari is TRIBBLE the pootch so to speak. There has been a lot of misleading stuff come out.

And a fine tribble it is. I am envious, but it still just gives you a level 1 buff for Damage, Regen & Resistance. You can breed much more "powerful" tribbles. Still, it remains the only Tribble breed that gives you all three buffs at once. See link in my sig for details

Yah, I just started breeding the other day. I have a few Mattson ones and I'm on my way towards getting the Nelson, Yu and Zinc. Which I'll probably never use after I get my Assimulated Tribble. Borg tribble ftw! =p

I don't really agree with "most", for example the personal shield lasted me all the way until the endgame, and the red matter capacitor I use all the time... I even the heard the blue phasers level up with you, but I only heard that.

I personally think the 500 pt bonus is a little lame. It saves you maybe 30 minutes of your life.. per character.

I wish I was able to get the Target pre-order phaser... that sounds great to me. Espically for PVP ground.

    Caveat emptor.

It's on the back of the dollar. Don't buy something unless you =know= what your buying.

    ,

Sure, but that's hard to do when there are so few details about the items, and you can't realy understand how it works until you use it anyways.

The websites you are looking for are

Star Trek Online retailer list: www.startrekonline.com/retail
Star Trek Online bonus item list: www.startrekonline.com/exclusives

And as everyone has already said the bonus skill points do not go over the cap.
You don't have to actually work for them though, you simply click 4 buttons and TA DA! Skill points.

I got the Wal-Mart preorder because it was in-character for my Captain. That was before the skill cap was enacted, basically nullifying that perk. Had I known that there'd be a skill cap, I'd have gone with a different vendor. :(

    Oh! First after IndigoFyre :p

Man this is the USA. If you dont rule out EVERY single possibility of anyone misunderstanding your offer: someone will and will sue you.
This game comes with 500 bonus Skill points.
Please be advised: These bonus skill points are rewarded to your character once you log into the game with him for the first time. Also note that even with those 500 skill points you will eventually NOT have more than any other customer. The term "bonus" therefore only relates to the fact that you will get them in addition to the game itself.
Once spend, these bonus points are not longer visible as "active bonus points" and can be spend only once. And no, you cannot claim them more than one time. Also please note that these Skill points are NOT "Cryptik-Points (tm)" and that you cannot spend them in the Cryptik Store to purchase other items that are not included in this bundle.
For any other question, please give us a call. We have installed a "500 Bonus-Points"-Hotline which is accesible 24/7. Our Bonus-Point-Team will gladly answer any questions that may be left.

Don,t see how the skill cap affects anything. If Iplay longer and faster tham you I will eventually pass you even if you were given 2500 skill points for pre-ordering.

I can confirm that the damage of the blue phasers do indeed increase as you level up. I have the blue phasers on everyone of my ships. Each time I get a new ship I redeem a connie for the phasers and put them on the new ship then decommission the connie.

Just double checked at RA1 my blue phasers are doing 182 phaser damage (145 DPS) +2% crit chance

Though at RA5 they're only equivalent to Mk IX (and just white at that), aren't they?

The second link needs a page name change. Rename it perks or something because those items can and at least one has appeared in a magazine.

I still stand by the "most" statement. Considering that the Red Matter Device was not a preorder bonus, but a Collector's Edition Bonus. I also use it regularly even on my RA vessel. I also use the TNG Series uniforms that came with it. Good stuff.

Didn't know that the shield was that effective, but awesome!

    Pretty much.

The bonus was announced a long time ago, when everyone - even some higher-ups at Cryptic - thought we were getting unlimited SP. The only reason anyone thought the points would put you over the cap was because Rumbleskin was making a doom topic about it every other day after the cap was announced.

The wording on those pages is unfamiliar. I Know I read a page or ad or something that worded it such that the 500 Skill Points were extra, beyond the normal limit.

Merely getting 500 Skill points faster does not matter. It is one 30 minute exploration mission at Commander and higher. In fact, the exploration mission is well worth your time since you also get BO Points, Merits, and Loot. And its not like its an edge. If the PvP system is balanced enough, you should be slugging it out with people who have the same level/skill points as you anyway (regardless of how who got what skill points in what way).
