I'm a relative noob , and cannot recite Star Trek canon, but I am knowledgeable about military structure, especially naval, and honestly feel that a possible avenue for Cryptic and the Devs to go is a more open ended feel.
As officers increase in Rank, they often move back and forth from Ship (Fleet) to Shore Duty. As a new assignment before a ship is given as is the current policy with promotion, an Officer should have to serve "Shore Duty". Now before anyone lampoons this idea, hear me out.
Say that after a promotion a character is assigned to Sol Station to do a variety of duties. Like as a Science Officer, attached to the medical department of the station, or a tactical security team as a Tactical Officer, and running missions or prompting decisions that could either give or cost skill points depending on outcomes.
It would give a slightly more realistic feel to overall game play experience. Also, as Captain of a ship, one usually makes day to day decisions that affect the overall mission. Having issues that come up that randomly has an effect on ship or crew that the player has to weigh and make a choice. I mean Captains aren't about running around doing missions all day, the are the CEO's of a ship. I just feel that the experience would have more re-playability, encourage development of true alt. characters for a more true game play, and provide a new set of challenges for all types of players.
I also understand that some players wont like the idea, but maybe the choices could be optional?
Ok time in an MMO is relative thats first. With that in mind be aware as your promoted you do have a shore mission fitting your new ship, it doesn't take long but who is to say thats not months of time. Alot of what you say sounds good, but I tend to see these ideas as quickly becoming tedious and stale, not to say yours is, but it has the potential and I m not sure I want to do a longer chain of missions to get my next ship or between ships. Maybe if it were optional prehaps, but I would get tired of this after the first time to be honest.
