Interesting Random Tidbit

Not exactly sure what section this goes in, meh.

Anyways, the other day I was looking up Enterprise E references and I stumbled upon John Eaves original concepts. Interestingly, I never knew that the Enterprise E's original design included saucer separation like the Enterprise D.

Maybe there's some of you out there that didn't know, and for that check out the concept image of it:

    Enjoy!

first link isnt working for me.

My father bought this back in the day: http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z242/mrlee27_photo/STOBlueprints.png

And I remember when he gave it to me when I started watching ST:NG in the 80's, I saw the the Original Ship also could seperate. I didn't know that! It was kinda neat to see those blueprints and to learn about that!

The old one would have required a major shipyard to reconnect.

I can see why the original Enterprise might have a need to separate but the ones that can separate and reconnect or use MVA. I never liked that concept. It just doesn't make any sense.

Oh thank gods, I thought I was the only Trek fan who didn't like MVAM....

It has the "cool" factor going for it, I grant you. It just doesn't make any tactical sense. No matter how you spin it, you are dividing yourself in to either 2 or 3 parts. You are splitting your power etc. Sure, you could say that it gives the enemy more targets to shoot at but targeting isn't that big of an issue in Star Trek. When you divide up now they can ignore the weakest part and destroy the more imminent one and deal with the other later.

Original Connie could seperate by blowing explosive bolts in the saucer and the nacelles. Obv reason for saucer sep is as a huge life boat, it was seen in a comic, cant recall the name but Kirk was on board the Farragut and tried to sep. Nacelles could be dropped if they were damaged (they were seen as the engines proper back then rather than simply housing the warp coils and generating the warp field).

Dont forget though! Never let Troi drive the ship as she will never fail to crash it.

Regarding MVAM. You're aware each part of Prometheus had its own M/ARA warp core easily as powerful as the Defiant's Mk VII. MVAM allows for multiple targeting, multiple assault vectors, increased weapons capabilities and can be seen as a psychological tool, I mean who wouldn't brick it when instead of one angry Fed warship you have 3?

Sorry about the first link, I hotlinked it and they stopped that, but on the second link it's the very last drawing that details the separation. I have to admit the E's separation looks much more interesting than the D's fugly shape once it separated (the Engineering hull).

Just wanted to add, that the saucer sep is more for saving the families, and science stations. Not to provide another target in combat. Although this is exactly what Picard used it for in his first mission. I'm not sure about the saucer weapons load out, but I think it only had a FWD Phaser array, maybe another AFT. Overall, it didn't take too many hardpoints away from the tactiacal section. I would imagine there would be a boost in turn rate due to the reduced mass, and increase in AUX power from the absent science stations. Making the tactical section more viable as a combat platform, but out of combat it could retain it's multi-role deepspace missions.

And three Defiant class vessels can protect and explore a larger area than a single Prometheus for the same cost in resources. No matter how you cut it the MVAM is a dumb idea.

The Prometheus was designed to fill a different role than the Defiant - the Defiant was a support craft, meant to help larger fleets fight the Borg, while the Prometheus was designed for deep space tactical reconnissance. That's why the Prometheus had MVAM, and that's why it made sense for it to work the way it did.

It is not about giving the enemy more targets as it would be used for maneuvering against an enemy or enemies. If its one ship the enemy only has to turn their strongest side to that one ship and keep the weak point away. If you have more then one ship you can make it so their weak point is to only one ship at a time. And if engaging multiple enemies this would allow you to avoid what I just explained provided you were against multiple enemies.
