Regarding STO and the future of WoW

I was just wondering how many of you quit WoW for STO?

There are heaps of new really good MMOs that have come out recently. Like Aion, Star Trek Online, Warhammer Online, and Star Wars Old Republic (soon). Whereas no single one can be called a true "WoW killer", it's fair to say that when combined, they represent a big threat to WoW. I definitely predict that WoW will continue to bleed subscribers over the next few years to these newer MMOs.

At the end of the day, repetition is the one thing that can make anyone want to quit an MMO for good. That's certainly why I quit WoW myself 7 months ago. I needed a fresh start with a new game, and have hopped into a few different ones. I wager many other gamers will be doing the same thing soon enough.

Your thoughts?

I agree but this is not the one for me. i will try Star Wars in a year and probably wind up screaming at their devs to.

I suppose it depends on the life of these new MMOs. Some just don't have enough content to hold people for very long, or don't appeal to everyone.

I gave up my WoW addiction for STO.

However honestly I was just playing it till STO came out. When I was playing pre-cu SWG I was thinking how cool a Star Trek version would be. Kept up with Perpetual's news once they announced it, and have followed it ever since to here.
Along the way have hopped around to several MMO's, but stayed with WoW the longest.

Really, I don't think there will ever truly be a wow killer with the exception of wow it self. The more MMOs there are the more stratified the market will become. You will see MMOs with less subscribers as a whole I imagine.

In a sense I think the MMO market will go through a correction phase where the subscriber base over all will shrink because of this stratification but the content of said MMO's will increase as companies will want to retain subscribers over trying to draw from the finite well of new subscribers.

I quit WoW much like you. I just got tired of it and not for STO or any other MMO.

AIon and Warhammer interested me for less that 2 months. I will try SWOR when it comes out (before if I get into Beta). For now, STO is the best of the worst.

A LOT more people went BACK to WOW, then are staying here from it.

I wouldn't be surprised if subs drop off sharply around TOR's release. Assuming STO makes it that far. There may be sharp dropoffs at the end of this month as well, we'll just have to wait and see.

How many more of these threads do we need lol.

If you combine all the MMo's on the market, they don't even touch on the number of subs WoW has lost, never mind the amount it has.

This thread does however win the Face palm, repeat thread of the week

I had a chance to take over a lvl 90 a couple months back but I declined because of my anticipaion for STO. I didn't want to waste someone elses oppurtunity.

    Does that count?

I never liked WoW. I was an avid EQ2 player for several years but eventually the Dev mentality over there of catering to the raiders and TRIBBLE the RPers just got to me. I quite over six months ago and never looked back. As a game I love STO. I love the solo-ability of the game which is rare in the MMO world. I wish there was more RP but I am sure that will come in time. I have no interest in Star Wars. yeah it looks great but I have no interest in playing a game where millions of infantile twelve year olds are running around with light sabers. No thank you. I am finished with fantasy for now so Aion is no good for me and I never liked Warhammer.

Unlike many other people I think STO is a great game. I believe it will only get better as it expands and grows. I have been playing since open Beta and my main toon is still only Commander 8. I guess it is because I am taking my time and reading the missions and really enjoying the story. Way to go Cryptic!

WoW will get a big jump again with Cataclism at the end of the year. STO and others will probably lose subs with that expansion launch. But it won't last that long because it will be the same game with new skins. Players will get board again and look for something new.

The next big game after that that will probably have the second most subs behind WoW willbe SW:TOR. From what they have said, it looks to have all the MMO features, including multiple options for end game, that WoW and other themepark games have. As well as the new feature of story. It is said that only about 10% of the game will be instanced. That tells me that only 10% will be the personal story and the rest will be the regular questing seen in MMO's. It is unrealized, but with Bioware, it has a great chance to deliver.

Also the fact that Bioware and Mythic are spending about 100+ million on the development. The limited amount of content released in videos and interviews is more than STO has now. I like STO and will be here a long time. But it is limited to casual style players. Not many options at all. WoW and SW:TOR will have more options for players.

SW:TOR and many other new MMO's will put a dent in WoW's subs. But they won't kill WoW. Blizzard's next MMO may have a chance though.

I dunno.... I know it's really popular but carrying a sword that looks like a Giant all day sucker and going on a quest to find a Goblins "tool Sack" (you can't make this stuff up folks  ) just dosen't appeal to me.

I left WoW to play Aion, then left Aion to play nothing until STO was available to play.
Played wow for 4.5 years and Aion for 3 months. We shall see how long I stay here as long as i am having fun that is all I care about. In Sto i am having fun.

i know so far i had more fun in wow for the first months then with STO sadly

the reason i left is because it was just depressing to play for me which any player who plays a warrior like me on wow know how i feel

i tried to get my warrior epic loot but my group always failed and i always got the raw end of a deal

then insult unto injury my friend who joined wow when i convinced him to play well he got a 55 and made a dk and lvled well his dk surpassed my warrior with ease in about a month he had all of this stuff that makes my warrior look like a noob and i was playing for about 2 years by then ugh warriors suck on wow their the cannon fodder

I had a lot of fun with WoW too.....

it did keep me entertained all the way to the end, and I went a little over a year.... got to end game so to speak...did some raids, etc.

the Achievements were my favorite... like getting the Explorer title.... and the magical lobster.

the world was vast.... in other words.... an MMO.

If the XFire numbers are any indication, all the other MMOs have a lot of work to do to even push WoW down to half the market. WoW doesn't seem to be in danger of losing ground any time soon.

(Of course, I'm linking to the site just as STO there is experiencing a bug. Its activity isn't being detected currently. But it was bunched into the "other" category in the pie chart before the bug, with no noticeable impact on WoW.)

Thanks all for your replies. Yeah, I generally agree with what you're all saying.

One thing I have to state is my extreme distaste for Blizzard these days. WoW used to be quite epic, until Blizz ran it into the ground with poorly concieved expansions that completely ruined it. This is another reason I quit. Very unhappy with the management there and the direction they're going.

I'm not really looking forward to future Blizzard games anymore either, like Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, etc. If they messed up WoW that bad, I can only imaging what they'd do to Starcraft/Diablo. So, no thanks!

I quit WoW for STO, but I'm just slowly losing interest in the genre all together because in the end all the games are the same, just in a different wrapper. The reason I'm playing STO is because I'm a Star Trek fan so I will probably be here for a long time but not play nearly as much as I play WoW because STO does not require such a time sink and I am happy about that.
