Confession: Having A Little Fun with the Enemy

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I can't keep a straight face when dealing with enemy captains any longer. I keep wanting to say, "This is Admiral Kendra Boseman of the USS Artemis; we mean you no harm. The Federation is an organization dedicated to peace and diplomacy."

But I never get that far any longer. When I get to the part about "we mean you no harm" I start smiling. Generally, the opposing captain responds suspiciously with, "Then why have you just scrambled my sensors?" I Ignore the question completely and by the time I reach "dedicated to peace" I'm giggling and already motioning to my tactical officer to let loose a salvo of photon torpedoes.

Am I wrong? Or just mean?

Who says you can't be both?

Personally, I'm happy at the rank of Commander (or lower).

That way, when StarFleet court martial your TRIBBLE when every mission turns into a killing spree, you can point at your pips and say "Does this say "captain" to you? No? Then stop leaving me in charge of the damn ship!"

At first I waited for then to open fire. As a Federation officer it just felt wrong to be taking the first shot. I dont bother anymore. You will end up haveing to kill them anyways, why not bast away. It isnt like there are any Federation friendly races. Everyone is against us and no one wants to settle peacefully.

I think this is a lot of people frustration with STO. Their should be more diplomatic solutions open to you.

Yeah, I agree, although to be honest I meant this post in humor. I feel more like a Klingon than a Federation commander most of the time. :)

I'm really surprised there aren't any stealth or infiltration missions. These things exist in Champions Online, so I know the engine is capable of it. Its just a lack of imagination and/or time on the developer's part.

I'm sure they'll address it before long--they admit they know that people aren't happy about all the shooting.

It would be a neat idea, but this is an MMO... I dont see many of these where missions even HAVE peacefulf resolutions lol

And the second they do, theyll have endless "I want moar combat" threads too.
You CANT go one or the other. You HAVE to leave the combat options open, or you will have even more leaving in droves. I know ID be one of those. If the option to vent and blow everyone/everything to atoms, ID be going back to WoW or wherever too lol

They could have really done some interesting things with an entire diplomacy system. Complete with diplomacy skill trees. I'd settle for much less so at least a nod in this direction from Cryptic would be welcome.

I have a little fun with my friends actually. I'm in a support cruiser and they're in an escort so I let them go in first, hang back until they're almost dead and then play "Enterprising Young Men" on my media player and come in giving them engineering team and extend shields.

I named my tactical officer "Diplomacy" and she uses High Yield and Attack Pattern Beta on cooldown. "At first contact, I always call for Diplomacy."

Diplomacy... just... doesn't.... always work. Ever tried reasoning with a Klingon? Yeah? How'd that end? Really! A knife at your throat, huh...

As I see it, these are trialing times for the Federation; all diplomacy has failed. The Romulans are ****ed because their home world exploded, the Klingons are high on their new-found power and the Orions an Hirogen are just trying to get some of our cake.

Although I regret not having diplomatic solutions ready, in this day and age, Starfleet has to be prepared to fight for the ideals of the Federation. Especially when new forces are amassing and our squabbling among the Alpha Quadrant races could pose a serious problem. Actually that'd be a good reason for diplomacy... nevermind.... but at the same time the federation must look out for its interests as Starfleet is, let's face it, the best thing against the Borg. If Starfleet falls, the Alpha Quadrant will become an extension of the Borg Empire.

And also, for game purposes, combat just simply is more interesting. A good diplomacy system might make the game too complicated. Non-linear gameplay is just incredibly difficult to implement into a MMO.

The command of a ship is most often given to the naval rank equivalent to a commissioned officer between commander (OF-4) and commodore or rear admiral (OF-6). The Polish Navy is, however, a notable exception naval captain in position of Lieutenant or Captain Lieutenant and OF-5 rank being a "commander" (komandor)

Regardless of actual rank a captain of a ship is still referred to as "Captain".

What? The Gunboat Diplomacy is very well implemented, I thinks.

We just don't have room in our ships for prisoners and have enough mercy to prevent them from suffering the prolonged effects of exposure to the vacuum of space.

    ;)

You're assuming all the missions have to involve combat in the first place. At least provide different options for completion of missions; for instance: in a ground mission you can elect to talk your way towards your objective, vaporize everyone in your path, or use stealth. But Cryptic crafts most of the missions so that combat is unavoidable by putting fifty enemies on top of the objective (or killing IS the objective).

Also, you don't have to swap combat for diplomacy. Both types of missions can exist in the game, we aren't advocating removing the combat. We just want some balance. Right now its 100% combat, 0% diplomacy. I'd be happy with 70% combat and 30% diplomacy or alternative resolution like stealth. Let me choose how I want to conduct my command career instead of forcing me to kill everyone. :)

People forget that warfare is just a tool of diplomacy. So, when you launch a full spread of quantums into a hostile ship, you ARE being diplomatic.

Nope, you're just playing a dumb shoot them up and doing the only thing the game can understand. Welcome to Space Invaders 2010.
