Please, Im not trying to bash Mac, but i'm just wondering why you would buy a Mac if your a gamer. I understand that Mac is great for all sorts of music/photo creativity and is generally very user friendly. I appreciate Mac and and what they can do, its just I am a gamer so I bought a Dell XPS instead. I have windows issues and am fighting that from time to time but I can pick any game up and play.

If playing games isn't your higest priority, you can easily have bought a mac and once you have it want to play games on it. Not everyone knows every use they will have for their computer before they make their purchassing descision.
Similarly, if you only want to play a subset of games (civilization, the sims, etc.) it's possible that you find you can play the ones you want on a mac only to have a new release you didn't know about that's pc exclusive and would like to play. Again, if gamies are your priority you should have gotten a windows box, but if you're more woried about other needs than it's enteierly poissible to fall into this trap.

Thanks, I didnt think of that. I suppose since I am a gamer and that is something I prioritize I always go for a PC over a Mac.
I'm going to have to assume you guys didn't actually read that thread (completely understandable, it's really long) or you would have seen it confirmed by a dev that there will never be a native Mac version of this game.
And I'll copy/paste the last one and highlight the most relevant bits (but read all 3 posts in full to really understand the full story) just to confirm it:
So you are talking in circles. Transgaming's Cider is not a native system. It is a modified Wine that uses a custom display system instead of X. It doesn't give you a whole lot that WineSkin or Crossover Games don't give you, so I'm not sure what you are asking for. Are you under the impression that the game doesn't look nice under Wine or something? A native client will never happen, but that is true of any game made in the last 5 years too. Native means not using DirectX, and for a huge number of reasons I can't possibly cover here OpenGL is not a viable option for making games anymore. Yes it works, but it costs far too much and certainly isn't worth the cost to port to when you have a perfectly fine Dx engine. Of all the things you mentioned as bugs, they are all Wine issues and therefore not something we can fix. Both the Wine and Codeweavers teams are aware of them, and thats pretty much all we can do. Other than some light cosmetic issues, do you actually have any problems running the game under either of the packaged Wine options (Crossover is Wine too if that isn't clear)? I'm not trying to be inflammatory here, but I'm kind of at a loss for what else we can do that doesn't involve rewriting the engine from scratch to be Mac native (and also being far worse at the same time). I guess an option is to hire one of the Wine devs to work on compat for us full-time, but I doubt that will fly on either end. All this talk about "official support" is really just a distraction from the simple fact that we do, indeed, care about OS X and Linux users and intend to do our best to support them, even though we can't do it as well as Windows since we lack the experience.
So, yeah. Sorry.
Long story short = There will never be a native Mac version... but there are also plenty of ways to get the game to run almost flawlessly on a Mac without it. (Which is precisely why they're not going to put the time and energy into making a native version.)

You made a great decision in buying and XPS Dell Comp. Mine is a few years old but runs just as well if not better than some of the new models out there lol.
I for one tell those who are considering to get a Dell to get an XPS because they are able to do a lot of things.

 Macs are not for gaming...it's really just a music/graphic designing computer. I laughed extremely hard whenever those Mac/PC commerials came on and advirtised false info
Admittedly, I have not read it in a long time. It is quite saddening to hear about the inability of Wine moding to get the job done. I have a number of friends who have been forced to buy Mac because of industry standards in graphic design and Education who have been chomping at the bit for STO.
what?
We've had STO working in Wine since STO Open Beta... what inability are you talking about?
FYI, because I'm crazy I thought I'd throw this out here. I play STO on a MacBook. Yes, I run it under Boot Camp. Technically, the previous generation MacBook (since they refreshed the line right after we got ours). It meets my two criteria: 1) I didn't have to get a new computer, 2) The game runs.
Does it play at maximum resolution. No. Actually, I usually run one notch lower at "recommended." I can bump it up for screenies and playing in the tailor, but the game is unplayably laggy if I tried to actually play at maximum.
Do I care? No. Like I said, the game runs. It looks pretty, and there's little lag.
Here's a little fact: If you walked into the apple store right now, every Mac you could walk out the door with plays STO. From the Mini to the Mac Pro.

I play it on both a macbook pro and an imac using wine. I really have not run into issues. I had graphical issues when I ran it under fusion (it was really creepy seeing what looked like a baby's face as the background for walls and space sometimes), but in Wine it seems fine.
Just had to note, that I really wanted to play this game and when I learned of its imminent launch I was devastated when I found out it wasn't gonna be on the MAC.
Yeh Im not an avid gamer so a MAC is usually fine for me. I gave up on PC's years back and my MAC has worked a dream with no problems. I actually did buy a PC last year for one of my business's and within 3 months I had to replace the hard drive, and yet my MAC simply looks after itself.
Later last year I bought a new aluminum macbook 13", so I did a bit of research in how I could get STO to play on it. The best solution I came across is the following and I can say it works a Dream ! no probs, no over heating, great graphics Im more than happy!
- I purchased 2GB of extra RAM making in total 4GB
- I dual booted with Windows 7, 32bit, and gave plenty of hard drive space to windows
( I had purchased a portable drive last year for all my music and film files, so my MacBook doesn't tend to need much)
- I updated my drivers as per STO's recommendations
- I installed the game in Open Beta testing and purchased from Direct 2 Drive
- I installed the game, it did come up with a warning that some of the Nvidia drivers where not current, but I double checked and they where so I just ignored this.
Steam was successfully released to the Mac yesterday and all games that were ported, work very well. From this point forward, all future Valve games will be both Win and Mac. The reason why WoW is so popular is that it runs on Win and Mac. If STO followed suit and released a Mac version (whether via Steam or direct download), it would make it easier for me to play more. Cryptic was working on a Xbox 360 version but Microsoft didn't approve it, so the project was cancelled. Unlike the consoles and Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, there's no approval process for getting an app to the Mac. If Cryptic was willing to spend a good chunk of time making a cancelled Xbox game, why not make a Mac version that will actually get released?
However, I was not aware that Crossover Games worked w/ STO til now. I read that 9.0 was recently released, so I'll be getting that soon. That will do until Cryptic releases a Mac version.

I thought Mac users were oh, so cool, and that anything on the PC must be TRIBBLE. Or at least that is what Steve Jobs tells me, repeatedly.
You know, I misread something and totally forgot to come back here and remove that post.
