As many of you know I have been trying to find out why my graphic card stopped working after the last patch. Cryptic has been great and they are working with me to see if we can get the card to work again.

I have been playing STO since November, I was chosen by Cryptic to be in the beta. They have all of my computer specs including my graphics card. I had no problems at all runing this game until the last patch.

Since I reported this I'm been told a bunch of things on how bad my card in and how it may have been working but just on the lowest setting possible. I just wanted to clear the air and show you why I'm pursuing this bug and say that the 8400 GS can run this game and has been running it without a problem until the last patch.

Here is a screenshot of the Earth space station:

as you can see the cards was running very well before the last patch. With these graphics you can see why I'm so surprised that it stopped working and am trying to work with Cryptic to get it running again. It was not running at the lowest setting, it was running at the recommend settings from the game.

Before I finish I would like to thank the Devs and Phoxe for working to help me try and get my card working again.

Thanks!

I had a similar graphics card to you and I had to upgrade my system as the card was 3 to 5 years old and had to play on basic/safe mode, as same thing happened to me. I recently upgraded the m/board, cpu and ATI HD graphics card.

    Now its WOW factor!!

Were you by any chance using the 196.75 WHQL drivers? You probably know this already, but those are responsible for a couple of cards literally cooking off.

Email text from NVIDIA at the beginning of this month (assuming you *are* using the 196.75 drivers):
    196.75 GeForce Alert!
We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.co.uk. Until we can verify the root cause for this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. The 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our website.

    Nope, 196.21.....

Still trying to fix this, but realising I probably have to get a new card, but that is not in the budget for a while.

Try upgrading to the current latest Nvidia driver (which does not have the fan control bug).

K so i gather your card works for other games just not this one since the patch.

I would personally suggest you try drivers other than the ones from the official site, for instance i get mine from

    http://downloads.guru3d.com/

They are optimized and much better than the official site drivers. if they work and you need help optimizing your control panel graphic specs hit me with a PM on the forums.

    Is this a Laptop? Because there is a know issue with the 8000 series having overheating problems in laptops. Some people have had some success cooling their laptops with this;

Same with me, been with NVIDIA support and they say that the driver is good to go but dam you can hear that fan go crazy when you get into a crowded area like like SB1 or one of the Borg instances where you have a 10 ships or so engaging all the cubes. I'm running a 9800GTX after blowing up my 9600GT with that driver problem. I received that same e-mail but it was after the card burned up, least Best Buy took care of it with no problems.

Yep, there are no problems with anything else...STO was running great until the last patch, and I'm talking about since I was chosen to be a beta testing back in November, not just since release. Because I have been playing with this card for so long I know the card can handle it under regular settings. The stuff just started happening right after the last patch....My drivers are fine, they are working with everything else and we tried them all already.... Thanks!
