I've got a problem on my HTPC when trying to play this game. Causes my computer to shut down after a couple minutes of in-game time...

My gaming rig is fine, but my HTPC is problematic.

Gaming rig is a Q6700 with an Intel board, and an ATi X1900 Pro

HTPC is a Q6700 with an Intel board and an ATi 2600XT HD

Aside from the card the only other difference is the monitor...

The gaming rig is a 22" monitor, and the HTPC is a 52" TV at 1080p... Now, while the game displayed properly at 1080p, I also tried 1024x768, and I keep getting the shut down crash... Seems more like it's going to sleep than crashing cause the computer to shut off... It's just really wacky... The two computers are very similar in specs, so I'm a bit stumped as to the problem...

Edit: I should point out that the HTPC is used to play BluRays and HDDVDs and does not fail, both of those tasks are more CPU/GPU intensive than the settings I'm trying to play this game on. I'm fairly positive it's not the system itself.

Figured it out... Looks like the video card is overheating. The system event log shows several messages from ATi's driver that indicates it shut the system down due to overheating... Using the ATI Overdrive feature while opening the game in windowed I was able to watch the temperature hit 100 degrees before killing the game and watching it go down again....

The design of the HTPC and location of the GPU/CPU looks to have created a hot spot in the system that is central to the GPU... So, essentially if I want to play the game on the HTPC I've got to figure out a way to cool the spot... May just not be doable...

Playing STO will stress your CPU and GPU much, much more than watching blu-rays.... and the HD2600 XT is not designed for gaming. Its a card purely designed for HD decoding - hence it's use in HTPCs.

It's at the lower end of the GPU range and less powerful than your other card - which is either an x1900 GT or an x1950 pro (there isn't an x1900 pro). The HD2600 XT is actually lower in processing power then the minimum recommended cards - http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?cpu=Radeon+HD+2600+XT will give you an idea of how bad this card is for gaming.

If you want to try and stop it overheating you may be able to force the fan speed up. I'd just stick to your gaming PC if I were you.
