So what are the advantages of being in a fleet?

I've noticed several fleets here and there and have been toying with the idea of joining one.
But the question is, Is there even a point to doing so? What can a fleet do that a solo player can not?

I don't believe there is any extra stuff you can do other than possible have your own chat channel to talk on. Fleets are generally there for like minded individuals or friends to plan things together.

Oh yeah, you get a shared bank that can store money as well as items. So, if you have a very good set of trusted friends in the game you could set up a fleet and pool your resources together that you can all use when needed.

Fleets are a good way to meet people in the game. The group of guys that I PvP with and do end-game content are from my fleet. There's no specific advantage, but end-game content does require a team to complete and its easier if you play with the same people repeatedly so that you learn each others strengths, etc. They also add a fun social aspect to the game allowing for fun events and role-play if you're interested in that. My fleet has weekly events such as races, or completing the fleet actions together.

Ah, so it's more or less just a social thing then. I have to admit though a Role Play type fleet sounds interesting, though I've never tried my hand at a Trek RP. Hrmmm... Must go make a backstory for character....

    Thanks for the responses! :D

So it's not possible to do group or fleet action with a pre-made group or fleet?

It is possible. It's just not very user-friendly yet. A group can get into a fleet action together, if they split into teams and coordinate when team leaders and members of those teams jump into the instance. I'm not describing it very well, but my fleet does a pretty good job of pulling it off when we do fleet actions.

There is no specific in-game mechanic to do anything with a group larger than 5 captains, however, it is possible to engage a fleet action that consists mostly of your fleetmembers. There is a post somewhere on the forums (sorry I'm not more specific, if I find it I'll post the link) that discusses the mechanics behind fleet actions and how to get your fleet in. Essentially you must gather your fleet in groups of five, have each group leader enter the action, have their groups follow until a new instance spawns for one of them, then change instance maps to the proper instance with your fleet. This works because when you transfer maps it first searches for a teammate, then a fleet member, then a friend in order to choose which instance you join.

EDIT: I feel stupid for posting this 1 minute after the previous response, I promise it wasn't there when I started writing this. lol

That's objoxious and Cryptic really needs to fix that. We should be able to form raids (I guess you could call them squadrons or something in this game) BEFORE entering a fleet action, not do this convoluted nonsense.

Other than end-game content which helps if you have a dedicated group as one poster said.......here comes the bomb.....most people use it as a social networking site for nothing more than hanging out in a fake bar in a game taking up valuable bandwidth and space.....lol....like the title says just my opinion. In any case you can join one and if you don't like it just quit and find another.

me too... this talk of pakleds and tamarians made me look them up on youtube and I watched both episodes.

I recall someone on these forums making an awesome joke about tamarian boffs.. it went along the lines:
    -Deploy Chroniton mine barrier
Tamarian boff looks at him, puzzled
-Of, FFS...... Shakra, at the Age of Dawn, when the ground went ka-boom
