Ok, Ive beat the tar out of my system with furmark, mem test, you name it and I have seen the GPU temps get to 90C and hold for 10's of hours with no lockups or problems.
When I play STO however it seems stability goes down the tubes when GPU temps get too much over 70C. To get around this I generally force GPU fan to 100% which keeps GPU temps under 70C and stability is still marginal at best.
All of that aside, tonight I had to leave my comp while in game. I also forgot to max my GPU fan. I came back to my system about 45 minutes later to find, as suspected I was logged out and sitting at the STO login screen. No biggie, but what really blew my mind was my GPU temp was sitting at 90C. Now why on earth would my GPU running so hot when there is nothing but a blue login screen? Somethings not right in Kansan.

Are you using an nvidia card? If so, which driver version are you using? I ask because nvidia put out a warning a while ago about one of their drivers that overheated graphics cards.

Yep gtx 275 with nvidia 196.21 drivers. Havent seen a warning related to that version. May try the latest beta driver.
You could limiting your framerate to something below 60. There's an option under Troubleshooting at the bottom of Video Options to set your framerate permanently to 30.
Or there's also a command /maxfps xx which you can type into chat, where xx is the desired constant framerate. Try 40 or 50. Shouldn't make much visible difference from 60 and may help to lower your overall temps somewhat. The maxfps chat command resets each time you exit the game though.

I do have it limited to 60 at the moment. Just loaded the latest beta driver and going to see how it goes.
Limiting it to 60 didn't make much difference for me since I'm running windowed, so my fps was already near 60 anyway. I've got it limited to 40 now and it runs several degrees cooler than at 60 and the fans also aren't quite as noisy.

Im not terribly worried about fan noise. Have 2 fans in case near proc, 2 in front of case, one blowing in right on GPU and one over hard drive cage. Overall system temps arent high at all. Whats strange is that when the gpu fan is on auto there doesnt seem to be enough load to cause the gpu fan speed to hit 100% and gpu gets a little warm but not dangerously so according to manufacturer.
What surprises me is how high the temps got sitting at a login screen, thats kinda silly.
Yeah I've noticed that as well, it gets very high when you idle on the disconnected-from-server or character selection screen. It's no higher for me than the highest temps during ground missions though, but still rather high for just a blank login screen.
I'm not running the 196.21 drivers though, I'm on the 186.16 ones. Temps were about 65-75 degrees at 60fps, at 40fps they're down to 63-68 degrees, which is the average for my card on other games. And the latter temps are with fans on about 75% instead of 100%, which makes a big difference in noise level. I'm seated right next to the case so fan noise does bug me...
I'd try changing drivers first. if the latest beta drivers make no difference you could try some random older ones, either 195 or pre-190. Some other people have mentioned downgrading made a difference in temps.
....call me crazy, but doesnt it strike you as a LITTLE sad when a game needs beta drivers? Last time I saw that was Timeshift.... there is a reason I didnt buy that.

Not really, since the last few driver revisions from nvidia have been plagued with problems. Also, STO is a new game. Chances are you would have to find a profile for this game so it would run well.

Would it even be worth my time to tell you in ALL MY YEARS PLAYING PC GAMES, I have NEVER EVER EVER had a game demand the absolute latest graphic drivers, however new. THIS GAME I updated for simply it had been a few months, so even if it was rare, it WAS fathomable that the little message in the corner meant something.
BUT when a game needs drivers as of yet not in final release... well as I said, TimeShift lost a sale for that alone when the demo demanded it. NO GAME sould need a drive NOT IN GOLD STATUS. /discussion

It doesnt demand the latest drivers, but then again, you shouldnt be using old drivers for an OS unless you have been specifically advised to. That message in the corner is a bug BOTH in the game and in the drivers themselves.

Generally, you can use the drivers you had unless issues arrise. One did.. the game had NAGWARE to tell me to update to something newer... and I decided it was going to annoy me so I did.
It's the ONE good thing this game has done for me... Dawn of War 2 NEVER looked and played better.

The nagging message only comes up when you're on drivers that fall within a certain bracket (something like 190-195) which caused major framerate issues for people. That's why it advised you to upgrade the drivers. It would have been better ofcourse if they'd displayed that message only once or twice instead of continuously nagging you about it, but oh well...
Also it doesn't require the latest drivers, if you're on drivers before 190 you don't get the message at all, so doing a rollback would have worked just as well.

I'm guessing you never played Crisis. There were similar issues when that first came out that required updated drivers.
This is hardly the first time a game has required a driver update. It probably will not be the last. And as was mentioned, nVidia has had some issues with driver releases of late, which could very well be part of the problem.

Actually, I did... it's sitting proudly on my desk. ADMITTEDLY, I waited a few months before I got it, but that was because I decided that game was worth upgrading my video card for. Never had an issue running the game, so I never actually looked at the forums. (And I always upgrade drivers when swapping cards... just seems an opportune time to go with hardware updates.)
HOWEVER, was it asking for beta drivers? Did anyone have to suggest beta drivers?

It reduces the load on your GPU by a lot.

btw, Im not going back... everything else but this game benefits WAY too much.
