Patcher/Game Client questions..

I've just noticed something strange, and thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone knows an answer.

Ever since I got myself set up to play on Tribble, Xfire no longer functions on either Tribble or Holodeck. I thought maybe it was getting confused because of the two copies of the client, so I went to my STO directory and made a shortcut to GameClient.exe from the Live folder.

Here's where it gets interesting. When I run that shortcut, Xfire works perfectly, but I am unable to connect to the game. The Account Server times out and never lets me log in. Only when I start the game up via the patcher does the game allow me to login, however as I've said, Xfire fails to initialize in-game.

Is the patcher running the client from a location other than my G:\Crytpic Studios directory? Is the patcher directly responsible for telling the client what servers to connect to? What's wrong here? Are we *required* to run the patcher in order to log in to the game?

I've getting this exact same issue, but I've only started experiencing it when I logged out earlier today and it prepatched. The Prepatch Folder is inside the C:Cryptic/Star Trek Online/Live/Prepatch I dont think this folder has anything to do with the .EXE of the game client, but I do think the prepatch changes a number inside the .exe telling the launcher we have Number X out of Y and I think thats whats causing the Xfire Issue, the Launcher is basically running on a "new" verison of STO that xfire doesn't recognize. I've tried manual detecting the game while logged in, I've restarted xfire while logged in, none of the ol' tricks are working :(

You cannot bypass the launcher, you must use the patcher. As for xfire, no idea on that front.

I don't know what the problem is, but ever since the launcher kept downloading the same patches over and over, XFire just up and quit working.

Thanks for that. I'll send a note to Xfire support, see if they can figure it out.

Huh, I thought there was an EXE file that could bypass it, though it timed out on the server when I tried it.

Do you mind if I ask how this works, exactly? Does the patcher feed the client a server list, or something, and thus the client doesn't know who it is connecting to? I'm not looking to change anything, more just curious. I've played a LOT of MMOs and never before have I come across a setup like this (such as: can't just load the client EXE to start the game).

Star Wars Galaxies works that way - you MUST use their launcher to start the game, as the regular .exe does not support launching directly, and you cannot log in using it anyway.

As for STO, in the past, I've been able to load the .exe directly when the Launcher has had issues, and have always been able to log in, so I don't know what Coderanger is talking about. The Launcher for this game only handles the patching, as far as I'm aware.

Also, LOL at the fact that I just called Coderanger a liar. :p

EDIT: I just tested it, and apparently Coderanger does know what he's talking about afterall. I don't know when they changed it, but I can confirm that launching the .exe directly NO LONGER works. It's a shame, really - it was nice that you could skip the Launcher whenever it wasn't working right.

There is a 100% chance it has never worked that way :-P

Just opted for the tribble test server. Recieved no patch on the regular server, but the tribble server has an 11gb patch? Just checking to see if thats supposed to happen.

Im booting up tribble for the first time to... so a patch might be normal for that... just wondering though.

Actually, I can get into the main game (Live) by using GameClient.exe from the game folder and skip using the launcher.. that is if the version hasn't changed between the Client and the server.

    Path

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\GameClent.exe

Run as Administrator mode = bypass the launcher so long as game version is correct with server

Currently client version does not = server version as such using GameClient.exe is not a viable method anymore since the Pre-Patch installed to the game.

but anyhow.. if that is not intended, you may want to look into it.

Tribble does not have an 11 GB patch.. when you launch into tribble, it copies your game to

    Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Playtest

and installs a 2.2 GB patch

You only DL 2.2 GB. the launcher shows the total amount of information being copied, not downloaded.

to make it faster, just copy your Live folder to your desktop (including all contents), rename it to Playtest, and put it next to your Live folder.. then run launcher.. wha la.. 2.2 GB patch installs and you are all set.

Huh... well I may have misstook the copying for a patch then. All I know is when I clicked on the tribble test shard... it begun the patching phase and had 11gb on there. So I interpreted that as a patch. Anywho... ill just let it finish. Im at 50 percent anyway. Only took about 10 min anyway.

Currently my launcher has 4500 mb out of 9250 patched (originally it was 11gb when it started)

Any luck from Xfire about this issue?

There's a 100% chance I used to get into Closed Beta that way, then I got into Open Beta that way, then I got into Headstart that way, and also logged in that way for the first week or so of Live, since you guys were having so many issues getting the Launcher to work right.

I don't know what changed, but it used to work.

Since crossfire came out everytime I try to log in a "Verify?" window comes up telling me I should verify all files and it should only take 10 to 20 minutes. So I verify them, and the engage button pops up, seems standard enough. I hit engage and the CRYPTIC logo comes up and then nothing else happens for a while. After about five minutes a window pops up that says...

Fatal Error: Unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to
Patch Server: The connection was idle for too long

then there is an OK button and when I hit it a window for Cryptic pops up to tell them about the problem.

I've tried downloading the game over and over, repatching the whole thing 4 times, I've turned off and on the on demand patching, I've tried opening up the settings on my fire wall, somewhere between the patcher window closing and the client window opening there is some kind of connection issue between my computer and the game client server.

I don't understand what to do, really frustrated here, spent 2 days of my time off from work trying to get it straightened out. Can someone please help me?
