Hi all

Im hoping to make Admiral tonight and am now wondering what ship to get :)

Im an Engineer and have enjoyed the cruisers, but am begining to think they are just too slow at turning although great at taking punishment.

So i was wondering what people would suggest is the best ship class for Admiral in their opinion and why?

Im thinking Escort due to their speed and punishment they can dish out?

Do yo think Engineer and Escort will work well?

Thanks in advance and see you about the Galaxy :)

My main character is an Engineer and I've used an Escort since I started and I loved it. After you've reached admiral you can get the Escort or Cruiser since it seems like that's what you are leaning towards. If you don't like you chose you could always buy another kind. I ended up getting the one free Escort as RA and buying the other Escort.

Tachnically any combination of captain+ship will work, it all just depends on the style you prefer. It'll just be less "optimized" and more "well rounded" if you mix it up. For instance, if you like electronic warfare, you really can't beat being a science captain on a science ship.

    But yes, it's completely viable.

The good news is that the T5 cruisers turn a little better than the T4 versions. But if you want to try escorts or science ships, then go for it. :) you can always buy something else later too.

Even with slightly messed up character skill point allocations and a bunch of uncommon MK X weapons (with a few Mk VIII ones in there as well), my Tactical officer does pretty well in an Assault Cruiser in both PvE and PvP at RA5 level. So, yeah, you can mash it up and still make the grade, just as easily as you can stick to the plan and end up as fodder. ;)

An early congrats to you :)

And as Nec points out - T5s do have a bit of a better turn than T4, so if you have the extra ship slots go for an Escort and a Cruiser and have the best of both worlds :)

Yep made it to Admiral after a couple of tough fights

Ended up going for a Fleet Escort, which after using Cruisers since the start feels so quick to respond and agile. Need to get used to it not being quite so tough and the different fighting tactics. Very cool though.

Think your right though Max, ill have to own an Assault Cruiser and Escort :D

    See ya in space all.

I have a RA5 engineer in a fleet escort and it works very well. Here's my loadout:

3 Dual phaser beams Mk X
    1 Quantum torp Mk X
    3 phaser turrets Mk X

3 EPS consoles Mk X, Rare
3 Induction stabilizer consoles Mx X
4 Phaser consoles, Mk X, rare

    Covariant shileds mk X, rare
    Efficient impluse engines Mk IV
    Graviton deflector array Mk X

    BO Skills:
    Tac #1
    Attack Pattern Omega III
    Beam Overload III
    Cannon Rapid fire I
    Torp High Yield I

    Tac #2
    Beam Overload III
    Cannon Rapid fire I
    Torp High Yield I

    Eng #1
    Eng team II
    Emergency power to shields I

    Eng #2
    Emergency power to shields I

    Sci
    Sci Team II
    Jam Sensors I

According to the damage log tool, I OD almost everyone, all the time. Cannons are overrated.

Max the skills that boost Rotate Shield Frequencies and EPS Power Transfer.

Escort works Ok, but the Assault cruiser is a definite improvement over the tier four. I HATED the turn rate on the USS u-haul, but LOVE the assault cruiser's performance even though it supposedly only has one more point to turn rate. I would say assault cruiser if you liked the cruiser line. The Deep space is nice but weak hull and the escort doesn't do much better. You can adapt well to anything, but if you are used to being hit hard you will need a lot of adjusting to get used to the frail alternatives.

Blasphemer! I love my pew pew cannons!! :p

I like the loadout you posted... I'm going to try something similar with my Escort.

But I'm going to have more cannons :p

I could see replacing all but one dual beam with cannons, but cannons (which turrets are) + beam + torp lets you have all 3 abilities activated at once for super alpha strike action.

I think playstyle adaptation really is the secret there. :) After trudling along in my cruiser, flitting about in my escort is a real change of pace. Prob is that the Fortress that is my cruiser is great for plodding into an 1v6 furball and - smoking and sparking - plodding back out the other side victorious. Not so for the escort which slags the first opponent and perhaps the second, but which ends up getting swiss-cheesed pretty quickly by the revenge-minded 3rd-through-6th. :D
Now, I'm not the sharpest tool in the drawer as regards some of those playing secrets that allow for the best escort pilots to win in those scenarios - that I openly admit. Still, definite fun is had in either escort or cruiser platform depending on how you've kitted it out. Play around with 'em and I think you'll find you like 'em both. I think that when we get some more fleet action content you'll find that having both will definitely add opportunity to your sessions.

I've not dipped too deeply into the science ships yet - that comes next. :)
