what's the difference between weapon types? like impulse, hyper, and combat?
i know the hyper is "efficent at high power levels" and the combat is "efficent at low power levels"
but what exactly does this "efficentcy" mean?
The combat engines will give a boost when at power levels below 50.
So, if like most people, you cut power to your engines in favor of weapons and shields in combat, combat engines will perform faster than normal engines. You will get little or no bonus when putting power above 50 for those engines.
Hyper engines get a bonus for power above 50, and will be able to cruise faster than other engines.
Regular engines give no bonus to power levels or speed.

That's how I understand at least.
oh so i get more energy in my combat engine when it's got low power, ok!. makes sense... i think =/... doesn't make me feel any faster though =/
Your impulse power is one of the factors in determining how easily you avoid taking damage (if it's high), and how hard you get hit (if it's low). Hyper-impulse engines apply larger bonuses/penalties when your power is above/below 50, respectively. Combat impulse engines apply smaller bonuses/penalties when your power is above/below 50, respectively.
So if your engine power is normally below 50, use combat engines so your penalties are lower. If your engine power is normally above 50, use hyper-impulse engines so your bonuses are higher.
Another recently discovered quirk is that larger ships (cruisers, carriers) go faster when equipping combat impulse engines, and the smaller ships (escorts, BoPs) go faster when equipping Hyper-impulse engines.

but being in impulse mode lowers your sheilds >_> so wouldn't havking high engine output be bad thing in combat? and what type of penalty/bonus? =/
Bonus is up to 50% damage avoidance. The penalty is increased critical hit chance against you. With my tier-5 BoP with Hyper-Impulse engines, I've re-set my defensive power setting to 90 shields and ~65 engines (including console bonuses). That was enough to get me to the 50% defensive bonus soft-cap. The BoP really can't take much shield damage and I have low-regen shields equipped anyway, so this was a win for me.

that confuses me you had a negative engine ammount with a hyper engine and had a 50% defense bonus?
also what's a BoP?
i want to add another question since we're on the topic.
when you say ~

faster, as in full impulse? or turning ship around for another round of fight?
and since i'm an escort captain, i'd be get more bonus if i equip Hyper-impulse engine, at above 50 level?

That's not a negative, it's a tilde... it's squiggly not a straight line. Tilde means "circa" or "approximately" when used with a single number or dates.

Faster as in at 50 engine power, with the same mark of engine, the combat engine is faster than the hyper engine for cruisers and science vessels, and vice versa for escorts.
It's an observation that doesn't matter as much compared to what your expected engine power will be. At high engine power hyper will always be better, and at low engine power, combat will always be better. It's just that the exact power level of the break point is different for different ships.

Yeah, the change in power levels are noticable, but noticing a change in actual speed is hard to detect.
So if your engine power is normally below 50, use combat engines so your penalties are lower. If your engine power is normally above 50, use hyper-impulse engines so your bonuses are higher.
