I'm looking to build a gaming PC.
I've picked out a Gigabyte Motherboard,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423
with 6.0 GB/S Sata, and USB 3.0
Probably get a low-end Core i7
question is what would be the sweet spot for a video card.
Biggest requirement, is that it has to play STO at 1920*1200 on my Dell 27" display. (at 30-60 FPS)
All the eye candy, I can take it or leave it. if I can have all the detail sliders at max, and 2x AA, for $150 I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.
My current computer is a MacBook Pro with 4gb of dual channel ram, will 3GB of triple channel be enough on the new machine, or do I really need to spring for 6?
thanks for your help all...

OR, If you MUST have an Nvidia card, have your credit card handy for the upcoming launch of Geforce GTX470 and 480. Otherwise known as Fermi, these cards will command an average 10% faster performance over the Radeon series, but is well over 6 months later to the Dx11 party, but showing up fasionably late, not TOO late, shall we say
10% is an average estimate based on early leaked info available on various hardware sites. In some case Fermi could perform significantly better then 10% faster and in other cases it will be significantly less, hence the average of 10%. Cost premium over Radeon may reflect said 10% or more though, $499 for GTX480 is the current leaked price rumor. All above info based on current rumors but should be fairly close.
The 5970 is around £130 - or $200 more expensive than a GTX295 (at least it is in the UK). I'd rather buy the Nvidia card, play everything up full at 1920x1200 and buy an xbox 360 with the change
(and no, I'm not an Nvidia fanboy - I just know when something is overkill)
Fair enough. If the GTX295 is cheaper then the 5970, then its a fair deal it would seem.
if you do buy ATI, dont use dynamic lighting, crytic need to fix it, crashes every 10 mins if you turn it on
hopfuly this will help you out.
Intel Quad 6600
8gig of crucial Memory
ATI 5770
Only for some. I have Dynamic Lighting enabled and have zero crashes on dual Radeon 5870's in CrossfireX.
Gigabyte Motherboard, with SATA 6.0 USB 3.0
Intel Core i7-930
6GB Ram
Radeon HD 5770
Crucial SATA 6.0GB/s SSD, 128 GB
(tossed in a used 400 GB SATA drive I had laying around for older games)
The $150 amount I quoted earlier was the "OMFG that is such a freaking deal, I'll never regret that" price
In the end I paid about $200 for the graphics and am quite satisfied.
Also FWIW, the monitor's resolution is 1920*1200, but it's a 24 inch model.
Like The_moshpit has say, not everyone is having trouble. The game run fine for me with almost everything on max with dynamic lighting. Played like that since open beta...
I forgot to say i have a Radeon HD3850 for video card.
