Is this supposed to be Star Trek or Bumper Cars?

I thought the idea of Star Trek space combat was to blow each other up with phasers and photon torpedoes etc, not fly around ramming into eachother, but maybe I was mistaken because currently Ramming Speed seems to be one of the most popular ”attacks” to start off a battle with, and also seems to be (IMO) ridiculously effective when used in such a way. When pulled off properly by two people working well together they can effectively fly at you almost all the way at full impulse then Ram you one after the other and you go from 100% shields and 100% hull to destroyed in 1-2 seconds.

Am I the only one who thinks the current Ramming Speed skill needs to be changed?

To me it seems as if the skill should be for situations where you know you are going to lose, and you want to either try and take the other ship down with you, or go out doing as much damage as you can. I would personally therefore prefer the skill to be changed so that either after you activate it and hit another ship you are destroyed (along with damaging the enemy), or that the skill cannot be activated unless you are below a certain shield/hull percentage.

Unfortunatly its also often the only way to finish someone off in PvP before they can RSP/Science/Engineering Team.
As stupid as that may be... :(

Ramming is fine as it is. The only ships that are dangerous when ramming are cruisers ramming non-cruisers. When a cruiser manages to ram you, you fail at positioning and anticipation of your opponent's moves.

Also, brace for impact greatly reduces the damage you take from ramming. Two ships ramming you to death from full health is virtually impossible unless you are standing stil lin space and use no defensive abilities whatsoever.

The only change I'd advocate would be making your ship ram everything you run into while in ramming-mode, instead of just the first thing. Too often have I wanted to ram a Carrier only to ram a fighter instead.

Actually today I was rammed by a defiant class escort in my Vorcha and he killed me with about 40% hull.

    Umm Cryptic?? Really??

its an equation of speed * mass = damage, but with more variables. The thing is that he also took a gigantic amount of damage in doing so, and if your team follows up theres a good chance that you can take him down very quickly (unless he gets propped up)

edit: ramming speed is a very risk VS reward manuever, if you have too little damage theres a good chance that your opponent will take you down because you failed to kill him.

Sounded like your shields were down, his were up and he rammed you before you could hit RSP/SciTeam/EPtS. Smart move, you should have complimented him for taking the risk.

I suppose. I was fighting three other guys at the time, so I really didn't think to dodge the ramming escort of death.

I mean, that's pretty deadly considering how maneuverable that ship is. But he would have had very little time before my shield recharged if you are correct because I din't notice my shield being down before i was space dust. It was worse than a HY torp barrage.

in canon a jem'hadar attack ship can destroy a galaxy class cruiser, ships aren't ment to take nearly as much physical force as another ship ramming them. It causes a hell of alot of damage but generally wrecks the other ship in the process.

on that note, when can I get a cattle-catcher attachment for my star cruiser :D

If you think about the mass of a starship and the velocity at which it's moving, even a relatively tiny ship like a Defiant is generating tremendous kinetic energy when it impacts another solid object. There are quite a few examples in canon of a small ship ramming a much lager one and doing critical damage to it (as well as itself, obv.). Take a look at Nemesis or the new Star Trek movie for a couple of simple examples.

A small ship ramming a larger one should absolutely be heavily damaged, but that doesn't mean the larger one should be less damaged just because it's bigger. In 'reality', ramming another ship at full impulse would probably destroy both vessels immediately.
