System Freezing Up Completely - ATI HD4870X2

My PC has more than enough juice to run STO and my graphics drivers are up to date, but the game has become unplayable due to system freezes. I used to get a lot of game crashes but was able to reload the client and get back in. Now the system freezes up completely requiring a hard reboot.

Most of these issues happen during ground missions.

I'm using an ATI HD 4870 X2 card which is more than amply powerful to handle the game, however, as I understand it, a lot of people are experiencing difficulties with STO and ATI working together.

I'm not about to shell out another $550 +/- for an Nvidia card just so I can play a game I've already paid the lifetime sub for.

Devs, could we please have someone take a look at these ATI issues?? I can't group with anyone for the new content for fear of a crash or freeze. :(

Edit: I'll add that the freeze usually occurs when I try to bring up the task manager since STO will keep running but not responding and not shutting down on its own.

Edit 2: 2 System freezes in under 15 minutes. The game is officially unplayable.

Underclock core 50MHz. That solved all of my locking up issues with ATI cards.

    I'll try that, thanks.

Edit: Nope, same instance/mission same crash. Thanks for the info anyway.

You need to give more information regarding your crash. Your initial post says nothing.

I have a Sapphire ATI Radeon 4870 w/512MB RAM, using most recent (Catalyst 10.2) drivers, and I get the following BSOD error, every time I play STO:

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

    STOP: 0x00000050

    ati3duag.dll

Is this the sort of issue you get?

I'll check tomorrow - pretty much asleep as I type this. I did make a few changes and tested it out a bit without crashes. I might have to chalk it up to idiocy on my part for the way I had configured the settings, but I need more time to give it a better workout and see.
I'm placing a hopeful bet on my own stupidity, 'cause it's cheaper to fix........ er sumthin' :D

    a few things:

    1) I just got back a ticket on this.... for my NVIDIA. They only said to rollback my driver (you know, despite having the exact reccomended one on the "anything after this is known to burn out graphic cards" sticky topic).... and the game itself saying to do so at startup.

    2) I really do think this is their fault at this point...

and 3) To add a "quick reply" I have to click to reply rather then just use the box at the bottom? Really?

Wow, Im glad Im on gamercard subscription.... Id be embarassed to give this half-assed company my credit card.

Which drivers are you using, what operating system, and which instance are you crashing in? I've got a 4870X2 and I can try and see if the same thing happens to me on my Win7 system.

@Ladyfox - I may have screwed things up myself with my settings in the in-game options panel. I'm testing the game now with some actual common sense changes. *knocking on wood*

I'll wish you luck then but if it does not work please reply back here and I'll see if I can help. :)
