That problem is a problem with your system/connection. Not the game. Something on your side is blocking your ability to log into the patch server.

BZZZZ wrong, i've already worked out that it's NOT my system, nor anything on my end as i have done every thing within my power to determin what it could it be and lo and be hold it's not :
blocked ports ( I have used NETTEST.EXE and it comes up all green(in other words no ports are blocked))
my fire walll (i have tried with it on/off)
my ISP (every game that i have got them to unblock ports for works except this one)
working even with the EU/US proxies turned on

so before making assumptions please don't patronise me with a "it's on your end" style of message as it can't be it has to be somthing on cryptics end or a node along the way.

Nettest only checks a few ports, not all.

If you'd like to get a packet capture of your authentication failure I can help pinpoint the location or step in the process you are having the problem.

Get a new capture right now, save it, and then email to the address I'll PM if you want to have a second set of eyes. Please note if you are running a proxy setting in the launcher. Close all other programs so I don't see that traffic. :)

Update - mail service appears to be unavailable as of this post, you can join IRC and PM me for the info.

ah umm, irc is a noo noo, it's blockd and since i don't use it very often i haven't been bothered to unblock it, give me a moment, i can upload it in a zip, and ill post a link.

    EDIT:

please note, to make sure it's there, i recorded clicking the submit button about 3-4 times just so you know.

thanks for you help, i don't care if i'm wrong and it is somthing that's on my end or whatever, i just want to play but still it's embaressing for tech suppourt for a game to come from other players of said game instead of the actual people responsible for suppourt.

    EDIT: link deleted

Got the file, go ahead and delete it from the link you sent (if possible) or edit your post with the link.

Looks like the file is corrupted that you posted.

Are you using Wireshark or another program to get the packet capture?

Try getting a new one, I'll PM you my email address so you don't post your capture up on a public location.

I've encountered a new error that I am getting disconnected from the account server. Is that the same error you are getting?

no becuase i can't get past patch luancher login, let alone game login or even disconnected from the server.

if it helps to know the patcher freezes when it tries to connect before giving the "unable to authenticate" error AND when i try being sneeky and connecting with the game client it just gives a "connection to acounts server times out"

Still get me a copy of that launcher freezing problem (don't send me one of the game client failure), but have you check your network card drivers?

Post up your dxdiag info for us.

Run dxdiag from Start - Run or from a command prompt. After it has finished running click on Save All Information at the bottom of the screen next to Exit.

Save the text file to your desktop and then open it up, copy the following four sections and paste to the forum.

    * System Information
    * Display Devices

You can not use the gamecleint to connect . you must use the launcher as the launcher sets up the gameclient with required information to connect.

Your packet capture shows your client attempting to connect to a Cryptic server IP on TCP 7004 and you don't get a response. I think TCP 7004 is blocked somewhere between your STO client and the STO server.

    3 0.088661 10.158.7.5 49706 208.95.185.165 7004 TCP 49706 > 7004 [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 [TCP CHECKSUM INCORRECT] Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=8 66

Go a command prompt and run "telnet 208.95.185.165 7004" and hit enter several times. Do you get an error response?

If you don't have Telnet client install I have that information and examples of Telnet on a TCP port in my FAQ

i downloaded a telnet app and tried to connect to that IP with that port and i got a winsock timeout error
could it mean the port is blocked? it shouldn't bee i think it was one of the ones i asked them to unblock, if it could be then ill phone up and ask them to unblock it again.
EDIT: if it were blocked wouldn't the patcher/launcher get stuck at the initial conection (yah know, the trying to connect message box you get before you get the acutal launcher/patcher)?

Not sure what Telnet app you downloaded, the Microsoft Telnet client comes with Microsoft Windows (not a third party app) and gives you a quick check result that matches my example.

TCP 7255 is used for the launcher update. If you look at my packet capture examples TCP 7004 is specifically tied to the account auth processes. :)

Sounds like TCP 7004 is not open for you.

Make sure your ISP is allowing TCP 80, 443, 7000 through 7500 outbound for the game to function.

if it's stuch an important port, why doesn't nettest test it?

Good question, I can only assume that nettest was created around Champions Online but I don't work for Cryptic. ;)

Because it is a network speed diagnostic tool, not a port checker. Checking all 500 ports would take annoyingly long.

Would it be possible to release a nettest for STO that checks TCP 80, 443, 7004, 7255, 7399 and a couple of other 7xxx ports?

While I realize 7000 - 7500 is needed, a nettest checking 7004 would greatly help troubleshooting just getting the launcher going for people.

Do you randomly pick a port between 7000 and 7500 to use? if so then how do you pick and stay picked? how could i change it?

The server port can be different for each instance you go into when in the game if you run without a proxy setting in the launcher. If you are running a proxy setting, you'll be running over TCP 80 once inside the game.

The patch, auth, and controller ports appear to be static for the launcher. At least from the multiple packet captures I've seen.

What he said ^^. Most core services have a fixed port in that range, but game servers are randomly allocated portmap-style.
