Client Crashes and Crashes to Desktop in Ground Combat

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Since the last patch on ground combat only I have been getting regular (by regular I mean every few minutes) client crashes or crashes to desktop in STO.

Sometimes it creates a Cryptic dump and sends it, sometimes it doesn't.

I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit and I have an ATI HD5770, latest drivers. It sits in a very well ventilated case and the GPU temp when a crash happens is never more than 55 degrees. My CPU is not overclocked and all mobo (Asus P5Q-E) drivers are up to date.

Is anybody else experiencing this?

I was getting screen freezes that required going out and then back in STO to clear.

Started trying out another online game, experiencing the same freezes, and would finally end with a nvlddmkm.sys 0x00000116 BSOD.

Ended up going into safe mode, uninstalling all of the video card drivers, and reinstalling them.

Same thing. Running Windows 7, 64 Bit, ATI 5800 Series Graphics Card, Latest Graphic Drivers. Ground Based PvP matches crash most common, with the "Opps" Cryptic Message Report popping every time. On average, game crashes to desktop every 5-10 minutes during ground PvP, and more recently, during regular ground based missions. No problems during space missions/travel. Very frustrating.

Same exact thing here. In fact it's exactly why I came to these forums. It only happens to me when I am on foot never in my ship. I just bought this game last night and tonight was the first time I've gotten to play it. Honestly it ain't the greatest game ever but it's no where near as bad as everyone says. I'm quite enjoying the game. When it works anyway.

Anyway I monitor my temps and my GPU (Radeon 5870) never got above 50c, throw in the fact that no other game I play does this and something just isn't right.

I don't know if it's anything to do with the recent patch or not cuz like I said tonight was my first night playing. For the record I run Windows 7 64 bit edition as well.

Same issue here...only on ground missions. The cure actually had this happening more often though, also someone else in my party was having the same issue until his crashed and never came back.

Found another thread where the workaround to this is apparently to turn off Dynamic Lighting. I tried this last night and didn't have a single crash. Game looked like TRIBBLE, but no crashes. The other thread is massive and still lacks any dev response on this....

Devs....you have a problem. Acknowledge it please.

Similar issues here, only on ground, not even during combat, just random crashes that bring my whole PC down. These occur only within STO, even a full stress-test will not crash my system.

Running Vista HP x64, Radeon 4890, Realtek HD integrated audio, all drivers up-to-date.

Dynamic Lighting has been off for awhile now, it did reduce the frequency of the crashes but they still occur. Disabling Dynamic Lighting is not the panacea for this issue, unfortunately. :(

I actually posted about this a couple days ago as well. I'm running Windows 7 32bit and ATI Radeon HD5770 for video. Turning off real-time shadows (found in the dynamic lighting section under advanced video options) solved my issue. However, I would like to be able to run those nice shadows with the gameplay. I was able to leave Dynamic lighting on.

I have the same problem; crashes on ground missions, space works properly (if if shadows set to high). Only having this issue with STO.

    Same here.
I have to run Ground Combat in reduced graphics mode or risk crash.
    ATI4800HD.

(BTW, I can run CO in full graphics, no problems)

Sadly, the only replies are conformations from others who have the same problem. No replies from Tech Support. The only known fix that I know of, which THANK GOD works, is to knock your graphics down to low. The problems I have with this situation are:
    1. I have a computer and GPU capable of running the game at the highest settings without any problems, being forced to run it at the lowest setting to avoid crashes really isn't acceptable
    2. This thread was started on 3/15/10, that is almost TWO WEEKS AGO, and the only responses have are from gamers such as myself, documenting the problem, and not a single response from Tech Support. Not even a simple "Sorry guys, still working on it". Very Poor Form. Cryptic has dropped the ball down a hole on this one!

AND, when you do get disconnected, when you come back, you may be booted from the match, on the same team again, but not able to attack, or, and I love this one best, on the opposite side able to kill your original team mates! DAMN IT CRYPTIC, THIS IS A PROFESSIONALLY RELEASED GAME, NOT A COLLEGE FREEBIE! TELL US YOU ARE AT LEAST AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, OR SO HELP US, WE"LL COLLECTIVELY MIND MELD YOU!

I have a intel quad core and a ati 5770, and I have crashes too. I will try your solutions, but Criptic has so many Gb's crash reports. And the tickets show the "standar reply"...(when system open a ticket for it)

Even I give guilty to grafic card... but I play Battlefield Bad Company 2 too, and on ground the "stress" no have mach.

On space all works fine... strange.

There are a few things at work here of which I am not sure you all are aware of. The game has fairly heavy use of physx for the ground. There are many items that you can "kick" around on the ground when they explode like used phaser turrets, there is also all of the rendering of shadows walls etc. Most of this does not happen in space, where there are realitivly few things to render, hence making the game play more smooth. I was having many of these problems where ground missions would quite literally shut my computer off, in the end it wasn't the game, gpu, or cpu that caused it, it was the power supply. The game uses a lot of resources and that means it puts a lot of power consumption to work, so if your PSU is a little old or doesn't have a strong 12v rail then you will probably need to replace the PSU as it is going bad. Once I replaced my PSU STO hasn't crashed once, not even in linux.

The other possible cause of crashes is the realtek sound drivers (64bit) as they have an cpu bug in the driver.
Which is why the game disable sound on those cards unless you us the -ignore64check command to enable sound.

If your having crashes while doing ground combat there are a few things I would recommend trying.

World texture quality: take this down to 75%
World Detail distance: take this down to 75%
    Shadows: Low

These three options are some of the most demanding settings for 90% of GPU's out there.

Not just me. ATI Sapphire 4870. Crashes my pc so it reboots. Thought I had a fracked pc until i realised it was a fracked game. I'll try the workaround but if not I'll be cancelling my sub. I pay to play. Wow, this is frustrating.

My own issues are generally with transition points where I will be thrown out of the game and then tht character will also lock if not all of them, re crashing on he launcher for a long time. It usually is ok for me to log again the next day but I wonder why is that only an issue after the last patch.

This is not the issue for most of us.

The problem is that Crytic's engine sucks. It always has right from the beginning with City of Heroes/Villians.

Personally, I believe the issue is related to the way that the engine handles memory addressing. Cryptic's engine does not support 64-bit memory addressing and will therefore only address 3.5GB maximum of RAM. I think that once the client hits that limit, instead of finding ways to flush memory, it simply dumps back to the desktop.

There is no excuse for an engine that behaves this way. Cryptic needs to realize that 64-bit processors, multi-core 64-bit processor, 4GB+ RAM, and 64-bit operating systems are now mainstream and they need to release a 64-bit client executable.

Even if this issue is not related to memory addressing, there's still no excuse for an engine this unstable at retail.

I have the same problem. Every time I enter ground combat the game will crash sooner or later, its usually when I am in the middle of a huge firefight too. I have a 3Ghz Core2 Duo, 8 gigs of Ram, and a 2GB 5870. I can run the game maxed out most of the time, but ground combat the frame rates suck. I had to turn off all Antialiasing and Anisotropic filters just to get frame rates above 30fps most of the time. But during large firefights the fame rates drop and the game crashes.

My friend is having this problem right now. REALLY IRRITATING CRYPTIC!

I just convinced him to buy the game yesterday, but he crashes out of every ground mission with a "268" report.

    he has an ATI 5750.

tach... its a shame that this bug is still there..

Guys if you have problems with ground missions crashing and a ATI Card, try to set "max lights per object to 2" or disable dynamic lighting completly.

This engien bug is there since beta with ATI 5xxx ot 4xxx cards, and it doesn't matter what driver your using. Ever sinice i use max lights 2 I have no problems with crashing on ground missions anymore, enable more then 2 -> blam, crash when reaching the first fight.

I really hope the dev team is gona fix that bug.. .but with a TWIMTBP title that unlikly...

Also really irritating that this issue isn't in a sticky topic...
