question about ingame chat and emotes

I couldn't find anything on the forum about this (maybe my search skills suck, so I'm sorry if this already posted before)

I can't seem to figure out how to us emotes (like sit in your captain's chair, or wave at someone) or how to chat (in zones, or reply to someone)

The only mmo I played was WoW and there you could type '/' and you message and you get a speechbubble. I appears STO works the same way. But when someone has a personal message to me in WoW you can replay with '/r' does this work in STO as well?

Can someone explain how this all works? Or direct me to a page or thread where it is all explained?

There is list emotes at the bottom and to the right of the chat window. You can also use /em XXXXXX where x is the name of the emote. The Captian's chair is tricky since you actually have to stand on the chair before doing the emote, or you will be on the ground in front of your chair.

For replying to tells, backspace should set it up to reply to the last person who sent you a tell. I think the /r works, but I always use backspace.

    Thanks!

I'm still getting used to this whole 'auto-grouping' system in STO. Sometimes I find myself in a group and I'm not sure if my group can see my messages, because they never reply :) Does '/ my message' work in such an instance? Or do I have to type '/p' (that's in WoW) of something like that? Same goes for zones.

I feel like such a noob in this game :) I finally got used to the whole mmo thing in WoW and it seems I have to relearn everything now...

The left hand side of the text input line has a drop down list for channels:
Zone (everyone in that zone and all of it's instances),
Local ( everyone within earshot . .I haven't seen exact numbers on the range of local chat), and
Team which is everyone on your team
