Launcher Update

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
So I bought the game today, intstalled it, and now when I try to run it, I get the infamous, "trying to update the launcher" message. I have opened all the ports, run the program as admin. The weird thing is, when I run the program, it appears to not be connecting to the internet at all.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v476/freefall86/?action=view&current=screen.jpg

The peak in the network is when I ran the net test. I was running the launcher both before and after, where the network traffic is basically at 0...I went as far as disabling the firewall altogether and still no go...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Run dxdiag from Start - Run or from a command prompt. After it has finished running click on Save All Information at the bottom of the screen next to Exit.

Save the text file to your desktop and then open it up, copy the following four sections and paste to the forum.

I do highly suggest you make sure your network adapter driver is current, but you might want to try running downloading the newest launcher and see if that helps.

A new "real" launcher (that is able to keep itself updated) was released a couple days ago, so you guys can stop using the test launchers now. You can get it here if you deleted your real launcher accidentally:

Independent of getting the launcher to work, you will want to get these drivers up to date. You might have to run dxdiag in administrator mode to get the driver information to show correctly, those are all missing from this report.

Run as admin, this is everything that was shown.

Downloaded the new launcher, at least it claims it's doing something now. But checking network traffic it still doesn't appear to be doing anything.

Run as admin, this is everything that was shown.

Downloaded the new launcher, at least it claims it's doing something now. But checking network traffic it still doesn't appear to be doing anything.

Did you upgrade your network adapter driver? Very important.

Get a packet capture started right before you start the launcher (make sure there aren't any star trek online.exe running in task manager), start the launcher, and save that capture when it fails.

Well it never technically fails, it just keeps reseting, I've gotten as high as 21 tries before giving up. I captured a full cycle though, how do I get the info to you?

OK it looks like something between the STO client and the Cryptic server is blocking the connection.

Take a look at that packet capture. On this line, right click and select Follow TCP Stream

    17 10.392423 192.168.0.100 52879 208.95.184.25 7255 TCP 52879 > 7255 [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=2 66

You'll see that your client keeps trying to connect to 208.95.184.25 on TCP 7255 until it finally resets at 31.74 seconds in. This is where it times out and tried again.

There is an initial setup on the SYN, SYN - ACK, ACK that incldues
    Cryptic 2
    Compress 1
    CRC 1

What I'd like for you to do is when the launcher is running and it keeps trying to connect try to telnet on 7255 to the patch server. Run your packet capture while STO launcher is repeating the connection attempt and your are trying the telnet connection.

    Telnet port test

From a command prompt (Start - Run - Cmd) telnet to the patch server to see if the TCP port is open. You can install telnet client if it isn't on the system easily.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Telnet-frequently-asked-questions

Telnet on port 7255 to netttest.crypticstudios.com and patchserver.crypticstudios.com

    Example:

    c:\telnet patchserver.crypticstudios.com 7255

After hitting enter a few times, you should get this if you are connecting on tcp 7255.
    Error "bad connection header"

    Connection to host lost.

    c:\>

A failed telnet connection on TCP 7255 will return cursor lines but not the above error from the server.

What I'd like for you to time is trying to telnet on tcp 7255 to the patch server at the same time the STO program is attempting to connect on the same port and to the patch server.

We should see a failed telnet attempt (packet capture will show you when you tried telnet in relation to the STO launcher update attempts.

I just did a fresh capture on my side, here is where it is broken on your side.
    192.168.1.105 49287 208.95.184.25 7255 TCP 49287 > 7255 [PSH, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=65700 Len=31 85

you should see this PSH, ACK response from the patch server
    208.95.184.25 7255 192.168.1.105 49287 TCP 7255 > 49287 [PSH, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=32 Win=65504 Len=31 85

Your client just keeps trying to send the PSH, ACK but never gets a reply from the patch server, like in my example above.

Sorry, it got munched when I copied from my FAQ

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Telnet-frequently-asked-questions
    How do I install Telnet?

By default, Telnet is not installed with Windows, but you can install it by following the steps below.
    To install Telnet Client

    1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Turn Windows features on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    2. In the Windows Features dialog box, select the Telnet Client check box.

    3. Click OK. The installation might take several minutes.

So we know that your PC, at the Wireshark capture level, is showing that you aren't getting the DATA packet replies back from Cryptic. 208.95.184.25 TCP 7255 to your internal IP and port with a PSH, ACK reply.

If you happen to have a hub (not a switch, but an old hub) and another PC/laptop available with a wired network adapter you can do a promiscuous packet capture to see the traffic outside of the STO PC.

The STO PC is connected to the hub on a port
Your 2nd PC/laptop is connected to the hub on a port
The hub is connected to your modem or router on the LAN side

You install Wireshark with WinPcap on the 2nd PC. When you run the packet capture you use promiscuous turned on so you see all traffic on the hub.

If you see the PSH, ACK traffic on the capture from 208.95.184.25 to your STO PC IP, you know that something local to the PC is blocking the connection. If you don't then you know something at your router / modem or ISP level is blocking that return traffic from Cryptic.

Any other options if I don't have access to a second computer?

It shouldn't be my router since the patch wouldn't work even when plugged straight into the wall.

OK great, that shows that the Telnet client is OK and you get a data packet response from Cryptic.
    35 4.225000 192.168.0.100 53801 208.95.184.25 7255 TCP 53801 > 7255 [PSH, ACK] Seq=3 Ack=1 Win=17520 Len=2 56
    36 4.286137 208.95.184.25 7255 192.168.0.100 53801 TCP 7255 > 53801 [PSH, ACK] Seq=1 Ack=5 Win=65531 Len=34 88

You don't get this PSH, ACK response from 208.95.184.25 when you are using the STO launcher.

Do you see what I mean in the packet capture?

Here is where I'd go with this. I think something on your local PC may be blocking the star trek online.exe program but is allowing telnet.exe.

Do you have any third party security applications like firewall, antispyware, antivirus, or application firewall on that PC? If you do you might have to not only disable them for testing but end process them in task manager.

If you only have the Microsoft Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender double check that star trek online.exe is allowed as an application.

Also setup an inbound and outbound rule on your Microsoft firewall to allow TCP 7255 (any program).

If you want to setup an invitation and email it to me I'll take a look.

Update: I think you'll need to setup your PC outside your router so you get a public IP for the remote assistance invitation to work. Make sure you have Windows firewall turned on when you are hooked up directly to the internet. :)

I use security essentials, as well as windows firewall, I disabled both and the problem persists. I also opened the port and again no joy. As far as I know there shouldn't be any other firewall programs on my computer.

It shouldn't be my router since the patch wouldn't work even when plugged straight into the wall.

Another option to try to confirm which ports are being blocked is www.firebind.com. It's a web-based tool that can test any TCP port or range of TCP ports to figure out which are blocked and how (in the outbound direction.) It will tell you if that port can reach the Internet with no problem, or whether it's being blocked with a TCP Reset, or a TCP Timeout. It's a much simpler option than the old standby "telnet" trick.

It won't tell you exactly where the block is happening, but it's a great tool to do quick and reliable tests as you experiment with changing config settings on your pc, router, etc.

You can also simply click on this link below and it will immediately test the 6 required ports.

That's a nice tool to use along with others.

There are other instances where a port will fail Firebind testing but it isn't directly do to a TCP TIMEOUT or TCP RESET. In some cases your Internet provider (whether it be your home ISP or a WiFi hotspot) will be running a proxy server for certain ports. One of the most common examples is an SMTP Proxy on TCP Port 25. Many broadband providers will only allow SMTP traffic on that port, so if the message format isn't SMTP, the Firebind test will fail. The Firebind team is considering protocol specific tests in the future, but for now, a Firebind failure on certain ports like TCP Port 25 doesn't always mean that port won't pass traffic - it could just mean it will only pass specific types of traffic, such as SMTP.
