I miss-interpreted what was happening.
I can install 1, 2, 3, or 4 memory dimms and the system will boot, but it says system memory is limited to 256Mb.
F2 (setup) = 2048Mb
Since the setup shows it, the system must be detecting that it's installed, but is not using it.
Start-My Computer-right click properties = 256Mb
This happened 5-6 months ago, but I forgot how i fixed it.
Copy and paste the System Information and the System Devices sections of dxdiag for us.
Run dxdiag from Start->Run or from a command prompt. After it has finished running click on Save All Information at the bottom of the screen next to Exit.
Save the text file to your desktop and then open it up

Doesn't My Computer->Properties show HDD space? Are you sure that isn't showing that you have a 250GB hard drive?

System properties shows you how much physical memory (RAM) your computer has. If you double click on My Computer and look at C:\ it will tell you how much hard drive space you have.
OP, if your video card shares system memory, it is possible that it is set too high and is consuming most of your memory.

This made my day, too much time playing on linux eh? Plus it's not likely to misinterprete a 250 gig hd as 256mb unless they've somehow rewritten the number of bits into a byte.
Could be a few reasons, motherboard could not support that much ram, though since you said it worked before I would doubt that. You also could have a mix of ECC and non ECC ram and have ECC enabled. You could also just have ram gone bad, at any rate, run 2 pairs at a time and see if the system'll register 1 gig.
and only the 256Mb on the system memory appears to be used.
You won't be able to tell how much your video card memory's in use without third party programs.
Even though my startup says "System Memory Limited to 256Mb":
I played yesterday for hours, and it was the best play since I started, made Ensign 9.
I set everything I could find on Default, then set:
1> 1024x768(desktop), the second choice.
2> Half Resolution off.
There was only the hint of lag, now and then.
Good detail, decent little jumpy motion, and even in combat it was fairly smooth.
Now only if it will stay this way! LOL
It must be true that the vidio card is eating up all shared memory, but apparently only during game play.

Are you wondering why your operating system is not using shared system RAM for your video adapter? Not sure I understand the tech support question.

From the replys, you need to tell us where you are seeing this.
Your idea about it displaying 'memory on the video card' is impossible. What you have here is serious hardware or operating system issues.

I think its a setting change that I don't know about.
