Ever since the past couple of patches, the game has gone from excellent to completely tanking graphics wise.
I get huge amounts of rubber-banding, rubber-banding on steroids basically to where my ship or character will snap back to its former location several times a second, constantly, rendering it completely out of my control even as things around me continue to act. (Often meaning that my ship is defenseless and is destroyed in a matter of seconds.)
If that wasn't enough, even when that's not happening the framerate has suddenly dropped enormously.
I can't see how it could be an issue on my side. I've got a quad core CPU with eight gigs of DDR3 RAM and an NVidia 9400 GFX card, and, as I said, it was performing beautifully up until the past couple of patches when suddenly this started to happen, without my having altered anything. And nothing I do seems to stop it. I've tried messing with the video settings many times, even setting them at the lowest settings and I still get the exact same problem. I've ensured nothing else is running in the background and still, same problem no matter what. It essentially renders the game unplayable, and I am completely baffled by what could be causing it.
A similar thing happened to me. I was able to play The Borg Deepspace Encounter but could not attack the Borg Spheres. But somehow they were able to attack and destroy me. Really weird.
Without knowing if this is Nvidia specific or what, the game devs won't know where to start looking.
Since the OP was kind enough to mention his video card in use, we know that the Geforce 9400 is one of the affected video cards. I'm not affected by this bug, but am using an ATI card, so if the others who had posted had mentioned their card in use, we'd have a LOT better idea of where this problem originates.

I agree. I urge anyone else affected by this bug to contribute this valuable data, in order to help us all.

just FYI, that 9400 isnt even a proper gaming card, and it performs horribly in most of the testing i have seen for games period. STO is no slouch @ beating on graphics cards, and while it may have been performing well enough to play on, i would hardly consider it gaming worthy in the first place. it only has 16 stream processors, putting it at a level comparable to integrated graphics. by comparison, a 9800GT has 112, and a 9800GTX has 128 (within the same generation), and the 9800GT costs less than $100 most places for the 512mb version now.
with that said, i havent noticed this on any of 3 rigs, one running an HD5870, one running an HD5850, and one running 2 HD5870s in crossfire. all are running the 10.2 catalyst driver pack. everyone complaining about problems needs to include driver version and card in use or the devs cant collect meaningful data with which to correct the problem unless you crash the game and send an error report in
ed: seems someone beat me to it lol. maybe i should pull out my 8800GT or my laptop which has a GT240M and test both of them for the problem. if no one can find an ATI card exhibiting this behavior i will test it
Update to this: Im running a ASUS 50V w/ Geforce 9700M GT (older drivers seems to help some)
However, i believe the issue is in overheating of either the GPU or CPU which would cause the system to slow down to cool. Or it could be some new kind of memory leak issue... but the problem eventually fixes itself after about a min. Then happens again a few mins later.

I'm running the latest drivers for it, but...should I try putting in my old 7900 GT instead? I used that one for a long time and I updated to this one because I was under the impression that it was a much better card, and I had mostly run out of my updating budget by that point after the processor, motherboard, and RAM.

yea i would put the 7900GT back in. based on all the performance benchmarks i could find your 7900GT is probably a faster card. i checked it vs the 8600GT and 9500GT, both of which are based on roughly identical specs, and they both come in at twice the specs of a 9400GT in raw compute power. the 7900GT is within the range of the 9500GT in performance. if you want a cheap card right now you can find 9800GTs, which would have 112SP to your 9400GTs 16SP (SP stands for spream processors). you could probably sell your 9400GT for like $30-40 on craigslist and then get a 9800GT for $89.99 on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143151 . the 9800GT would be a whole order of magnitude faster, and more comparable to where your 7900GT was as far as performance for it's generation
What would you suggest for good STO laptop graphics runners?
I'm looking for a laptop and want to make sure it's up to specs for the game itself. I can't seem to find the equivalent for the graphics cards needed/recommeneded to run the game.
Anybody have any good remmendations as this will be a factor for purchase.
Also the mish mosh lingo they use for processors is kinda confusing. Any suggestions?

For mobile graphics, make sure it has either a Geforce mobile graphics or Radeon mobile graphics in it. No Intel graphics, they suck. Mobile CPUs are a bit more forgiving as long as it's not AMD Neo, AMD Sempron, Intel Atom, or Intel Celeron. Those are all budget or low power CPUs, not meant for gaming at all.
AMD Athlon II, AMD Phenom II, Intel Core 2 (Duo or Quad), Core i3, i5, or i7 would all be safe choices. As long as you stay within these listed brands, things like Mhz ratings and cache amounts are not worth worrying about if just looking at gaming performance because these CPUs listed are all very powerful, even at lower clock speeds.
Amen Friend. Before the Feb 19th patch ( and into open beta) every, graphics-wise was great; had all the settings on max. After the Feb 19th patch, everything tanks; went from space (and ground) at 50-60 FPS to 1-8 FPS and, at completely random intervals. The only way I was able to pretty mutch fix it was setting the "Hlaf Graphics" setting to "On". This should'nt be happening. I've tried changing all of the in-game settings and the out-of-game NVIDIA settings with no luck. If I were a betting man, I would place my bet on an environmental issue. Edit** my specs are: AMD 2.2Gh quad core, NVIDIA 9500 GTX, 3megs memory, 380 Gb hard Drive, DX 11, Sound Blaster XFi, Windows Vista 32 and an 800 watt power supply. I checked/to make sure all of the drivers are current which, they are. Dunno what else to do except wait for a patch! *edit* well went ahead and bit the bullet today and upgraded to a PNY GeForce GT240. After installing, I haven't had a single problem; even having been playing for 3 hours now.

ATI RADEON HD5770 (1024MB) aka. more then good enough :S
I noticed one thing. When i fly to a couple of ships in combat in a Borg DSE it looks like there are LOTS of Feedback pulse like thingys shooting into all directions from the ships im getting closer to.
When that happens fps can go down to 1 sometimes.
The fps go back up again, but not as much as usual.

Hmmmm, so one somewhat older Nvidia card and now one newer ATI card. Doesn't sound driver related then. But 2 cards sampled hardly makes much more then a start. We need more owners with this prob to sound off with what they're running.
GForce 9800GTX+. This seems more like a network problem to me (but what do I know) - I can see other players moving, but can't control my ship, then I get tons of rubber-band updates and can control things for a while, then it goes onto autopilot for a while.
I'm not using anything near the highest video settings.
I bought STO shortly after release and started playing it with a nv 8500gt (ye i know)... but i had rubber banding issues with that.....
Have recently updated to a nv9800gt 1028mb ddr3, and for a while this stopped, but now it is back with a vengeance, rubber banding- then server not responding, then server disconnecting...
I too think that this is not a gfx card issue but a server issue, I have played many other mmo's and have had similar problems which were all sorted on the server side, not by updating my pc!!!
I am in the uk, I do not know how many others in the UK are experiencing this, but my friend in scotland had exactly the same problems at the same time as me the other night. this was roughly when traffic from the usa started to come online, it made our game unplayable , server disconnecting / rubberbanding/ unable to log into account server etc.etc.
I have tried cryptic support twice with regards to this to see if there are any changes i can make to my internet preferences, but get put in a queue, then get a recorded message telling me to log onto champions online support website.... WOT KIND OF SUPPORT PHONE LINE IS THAT!!!!
I payed good money for this game and enjoy playing it, when i can and if i can, but as a paying subscriber, i am appalled at the level of customer support, these issues should be fixed quick, (cryptic must be making a fortune on this game)and maybe even get a european server up and running , to see if this helps with these issues.
hopefully a support tech will read this and respond, as i can't be bothered to use the inadequate support phone line again:mad:
Um, enioreh, I disagree with you totally about the phone support. I called them last week with a VERY technical question about SLI and CrossfireX support and they were able to answer my questions with proper technical knowledge. I waited 5 minutes in the que which is normal by any technical standards. Cryptic's support team was even able to bring in a 2nd level tech on the call with no delay when the 1st level tech didn't know the answer. Cryptic handled the call very well, by my standards. My standards are set by BEING a phone support tech who knows how support is supposed to be handled, and Cryptic is doing the job just fine.
Played yesterday and everything was fine, now tried playing today and my fps just dropped like crazy, i get 19 fps in a system even on recommended settings while i was getting more than 30 at everything maxed yesterday... WHAT DID THEY DO?!?
Edit: Forgot to say I'm using a HD 5770 1g with 6g of ram and a quad core, I can play Far Cry 2 at max setting with plenty of fps so this "crappy looking game" (in comparison to a lot of more graphic heavy games) shouldn't pose a problem.
Edit 2: Just realized that even the menu and chat typing rate is affected by the fps drop, I smell a memory hole!:p
Okay, I have indeed confirmed this bug exists, AND is brand/model independant. The bug is present and accounted for on 3 test machines here. Configurations as follows:
The bug randomly manifests in space areas and is a sharp drop in FPS for no apparent reason. Alt-Tabbing out of the game DOES remedy this situation temporarily. This bug IS game specific, I'm sure of it now. Cryptic broke something in one of the recent patches.
No. I did not make any changes to my system, download any new updates nor is it ridden with spyware etc.
I take care of my system and defrag it regularly.
Make sure you write a support ticket .... I got am answer to my problem, buy a new graphics card ...
I played the game for 5 1/2 months, chosen for Closed Beta, and now all of a sudden it is my card.
Let's see $300 divided by , lets say 3.5 because in closed neta you didn't have access all the time.
$85.71 per month ..... I got this as a gift and don't know if I can afford to buy a new graphics card for a while.
Thing is if I had not been playing the game in Beta (Closed and Open) without major graphic issues, I probably don't buy the game or the lifetime ......

That was less then helpful. Thank you for telling us nothing that we can use. Do you know specifically WHEN performance began tanking for you? Could you tell us when it specifically tanks? In space? On ground/stations? Where?
Some of us actually have faith that this is something fixable with a little constructive input.
OK i've been having major issues with this game since the last patch
Im currently running an Nvidia 275 GTX, which before the patch allowed me to run with all settings at their highest possible settings. Now to become just about playable I have to run everything at the minimum possible.

That's a good card too! This game has gotten horrid on performance.
I switched back in my 7900 GT, and everything was running fine...until this last huge patch, the pre-Season One patch. Suddenly I'm experiencing the same thing I described in the OP again.
It must be some kind of memory leak. It can't be my card because it performs flawlessly on everything else.

I start playing and everything is working great ... then between 5 and 10 minutes later it starts looking like a very slow time lapsed photo ....
This needs attention NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least tell us what is going on and when can we expect to play!
