Last night I decide to do the crafting in MA....

Last night I decide to do the crafting in MA, after spending about 3 Million credits purchasing data samples and craftable items I finally unlocked the all three MK VIII and MK X vendors. And also supply me, my crew, my alts and my alts crew with all the engines, shields, armor and weapons they will ever need until they are Captains.

The lack of feed back of any kind is ridiculous.

The vendors never tell when the next vendor is unlocked or even how close, they next vendor at least says who you need to talk to to unlock, but not how close.

What could be crafted was limited, and on Exchange the prices were very high for these items, and there is quite a bit of price controls going on, but that is not unusual. but it did explain why plasmas were so expensive at mk IV and VI, yet dirt cheap at VIII and X.

It was a good waste of time for a couple ours. I could have done it much cheaper if I gathered the data samples myself and actually bothered to go to the vendors that sold some of the things, but I had the credits and nothing else to do with them.

I hope they improve this in the future, but for now, I am set for outfitting my characters, ships and BO with nice rare items. But over all there is more money in just selling the data samples.

I think I saw mention of some crafting "improvements" coming down the line, if that helps - but yes, its generally a time and currecy sink right now. Not much more.

I get more enjoyment making money from selling samples than I do crafting with them....

There seems to be a drastic shortage of mk 4 and mk 6 items. You are lucky, for the entire time I've played the game, I've never seen even one for sale on the exchange. It seems like it might be easier / cheaper to keep buying / scrapping ships for components rather do mission after mission without a drop.

This really needs to be looked at.

Some of this is due to the lack of need for currency in the game. I don't even bother putting Mark iV or VI (or any item for that matter) on the Exchange. I just dump them onto the replicator. Combine that with the issue of not knowing what is needed for crafting and what isn't, makes it all a lot more hassle for credits I don't need than it is worth. I suppose if it wasn't a complete pain in the butt to go back to a space station with an Exchange terminal, I might consider it. But that just becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I do however save all my data samples (banked) but not sure why to be honest. I'll never craft in this game (hate crafting in general) and STO's is weaker than most.

i actually took a few mins @ mem alpha and typed up the list of T3 upgradables in my fleet info tab. granted that 'aint what its for, but it makes a good quick reference guide for a lot of people that way.

but frankly i unlocked the top tier @ mem alpha the same time i was able to requisition RA5 stuff. mem alpha doesnt even come close. not a single crafting option worth it. i just go to mem alpha when a friend ranks up to craft em a few things out of charity. 'bout all its good for.

I'm stuck at the Tier 2, getting the items needed for crafting is just a pain.

Imagine a future where crafting doesn't involve mindless grinding, but actually enhances your items.

Say I have a Phaser Beam Array Mk VI, I could take that to a Tier 2 crafter and they would upgrade that item to an uncommon with a random buff (Acc, CritD, CritH, ect). They would do this for data samples. That way ANY item could be upgraded. I could then go and upgrade that item again(maybe to rare, or another buff), but it would require more samples and maybe some credits, with a chance that the upgrade would fail, and you might lose the item.

Think Torchlight's wizard, who can buff items up, but each buff increases the chance of a negative outcome.

I purchase everything I needed that night on exchange. Engines were easy finds, as were Deflectors, both I purchased for less than list price. I only had a little trouble with Tactical, I did lots of kits (mk III and V's) and torpedo launchers, to get tier 3 (mk VIII & mk X).

I also purchased all the data samples I needed.

But also did spend 3+ million credits

I don't expect this post to generate much of a response but I need to ask where I can purchase MARK IV gear, so I don't have to keep chasing my tail all over the quadrant looking for stuff. I've been to:

Sol System (Has gear but it's all purchased with medals or can't be used for upgrades).
Deep Space 9 (which has mark V gear and up).
Sierra System (Limited items and nothing able to be used in MA for crafting).
Deep Space K-7 (Has gear but it's all Admiral only and bought with medals).

Where else is there to go to buy the gear I need to craft on? I've looked at the exchange but all the the Mark IV plasma torpedoes are running at 100K + for just one. That's just insane when you need at least 12+ to upgrade. There's got to be a better way.

Also, I've starting to wonder if the items you buy with those medals (Order of Exploration), is the gear that you would normally get if you had crafted (upgraded) it? It seems like it is. If that's the case, why bother crafting anything at all if you just do missions to get the gear instead?

    Seems slightly redundant.

    Red Shirted,

I've been thinking about crafting since I have all my data sample saved from going 1-45 and some more from other alts I started. I just have a couple questions:

    1) How many data samples do you think it took you to get to top tier crafting?
    - I currently somewhere between 1000 - 1200 data samples I would guesstimate. Enough or would I need to purchase more (and clearly the make up of which I have makes a difference)

    2) How much did you have spend on items in the exchange?
    - I have ~4.3 million ECs atm so I have more than enough to do what you did and just cruise through 3 million ECs to get there but I wanted to see if I could get there relatively cheaply.

    Thanks for any input.

Currently there aren't any vendors that I know of where you can buy the common Mk IV items for crafting. That's why they are so expensive on the exchange. However, the Memory Alpha update is coming to the Tribble test server really soon. It will supposedly have a vendor where you can buy the common gear you need in order to craft.

For the most part the exploration gear is all green (uncommon) items and the crafted gear is blue (rare). So the crafted should be a bit better at least.

See my post above... I'd wait a couple more weeks for it to hit live and buy from the vendor if you want to keep the cost down.

Good to know. I knew there was a MA update coming (prolly in season 1.2) but I didn't realize that the "common" items used for crafting will be avaialble for purchase. That's great news. At least the price will be resonable then as the Exchange prices are insanely inflated espcecially for lower tier items (Mk IV and VI especially). I was shocked to find out how much MK IV and VI EPS Flow Regulartors were as I am leveing my alt. There is no way a new player to STO could afford those items, they are exclusively for RA5s that are starting their 2nd or 3rd alt.
