I'm trying to decide if I want to use a Science Vessel or Cruiser, (I'm an Engineering Officer).
I bought a Sci. Vessel in T2, (taking the Cruiser as my freebie), and to be honest there really wasn't enough of a difference between the two ships to give me an idea of which one's playstyle I'd prefer... so a "waste" of 20K credits.
I've heard the differences between ships starts ramping up around T3... is this true?
Is it worth the time / credits to purchase a Science Vessel for comparison to a Cruiser in the T3 range?
Or again will I find they play too much alike.
Maybe it's T4 where I hear the Galaxy is such a pig to turn that I'll see any real differences?
Any insight you can give me into this; when it's a good tier to compare the two ship types, is greatly appreciated.
Yes T4 is where you'll see a huge difference in turn rate alone. As for the other differences I would think it would be the BO's stations and the spec you'd need of course.
T3 you should start to see more of a difference. The cruiser has more weapon slots and starts to push you in an Engineering skill direction whereas the sci ship starts to push you in a science skill direction.
And dropping 20K energy credits on a ship is not really a waste. It may seem like it early on, but the farther you get into the game you'll realize 20K doesn't matter. You can sell individual items for 2OK to a Ferengi, the biggest ripoff artists in the game.
I was cruiser all the way till T3, when I decided to give the sci ship a try. I did one mission, then immediately returned to starbase and bought a T3 cruiser. Never looked back.

I have found that Tier 3 (Cmr) is the time when you really get to try out all of the possibilities. BUY ALL THREE SHIPS, and play with them to find what you like. the cost is neglible since there are lots of Tier2 (LtCmr) people looking for your stripped equipment on the exchange. Here's what you can expect:
Cruiser (engineering) - Purchase 68,500
Sell: 4x Phaser Beam Array Mk IV @ 10K each (40,000)
Scrap: Engine (7500), Shield (7500), deflector (7500), 2x torpedos (3200)
Net Cost: 2800
The same can be said for Science and escort. In other words, "At these prices, WHY NOT?" your going to put your own weapons on it anyway, right?
When choosing ships, one of the most important factors are CREW. Since you can have up to EIGHT (8) crew members, there is no excuse for not having 2x Eng, 2x Sci, and 2x Tac. Since Tier 3 allows all primary crew to be Lt, the impact is nothing.
This way, by the time you make captain you will be comfortable with your decision.
Well, I was excited to try out the sci ship, mainly because it had the subsystem targeting which sounded really cool. I found it less than useful, not what I expected at all. Also, the sci ship is just far too squishy for my taste.
Guess it's just a playstyle thing
I am a Tac off in a Sci ship. Cpt 6 It works good for me. Good turn rate, good weapons and not a glass hull.
Admiral soon and im not sure if ill stay Sci or Tact ship. Although I like being a Tac off. Having a Borg BO (engineer) with me helps... Gives me good balance..

Thank you all for the replies.
MichaelSizemore, do you mind if I ask why?
Looks?
Performance?
Playstyle you didn't like?
