Help New computer

OK, I just bought a new computer system from www.ibuypower.com. This is the main problem I am having: I CANNOT download anything from the internet. I can surf the net, but I cannot download any files whatsoever. I have no idea why this is and I have never had this type of problem before. I can surf the net fine, but everytime I try to download any file from the net--itunes, aim, google chrome--it downloads a few kilobytes and then just freezes dead. The computer itself still runs and will still surf the net, but the download absolutely freezes. Is there anyone out there who might know what the heck is going on?

Its 2:41am my time as I post this. I am exhausted and frustrated, as this could be a very serious potential problem. I will be calling tech support tomorrow night when I get home, but I really hope someone else might have an answer for this or could pinpoint the problem.

try disabling your Firewall/Antivirus protection and trying the download again, also are your downloads limited by your ISP?
Also try checking the default location your browser downloads to and changing that, change it to desktop for example.

I am running cell phone internet (Cellular South) through an EVDO usb input router. I can download whatever fine on my laptop or my father-in-law's old computer that runs vista and barely runs STO. I am connecting to the router wirelessly through a linksys wireless g usb card. My wireless router is an mbr-1000. I have also tried connecting through an ethernet cord to the router, but it makes no difference.

I had installed Norton right before the problem began. I have uninstalled and removed all components, but I still cannot download:

    Google Chrome
    Itunes
Windows Updates (this is really perturbing me, because I know its not a 7 compatibility issue)

I was able to successfully download last night (after I posted here):

    AIM
    Adobe PDF Files

Don't flame me because this is STO (and no, I am not cancelling my subscription--I just have more than one mmorpg), but I also tried to download EVE Online..... That was not pretty as my screen just sat there flashing (actually, the frame where I am assuming the download link was taking me--rest of the screen was fine).

I have also tried disabling my windows firewall by simply turning it off for both home and private networks. That just cause Internet Explorer to act crazy. I am beginning to wonder if this is less a "new computer" or "windows seven" problem, and more an internet explorer problem. My computer, on its own, downloaded an update last night, and installed it during a reboot. However, any attempt to use my browser to get the other updates still pending meets with no results.

Any ideas what settings might be "blocking" a download on IE in the security screen. But if so, then why are only a few things blocked? Windows update is the thing that is really disturbing me.

Thanks for all the help. I am at work, and only got a few hours sleep last night.

Addendum: after I typed this, I discovered I may be having problems because I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, as opposed to 32. Apparently Google Chrome and Itunes do not jive with 64-bit yet unless you get a special download. I will attempt that tonight.

This STILL does not answer the Windows Update issue or why EVE Online was freaking out.

Hmm just out of curiosity, have you turned off UAC? When I installed Win 7 64-bit Ultimate it was switched off by default, but its good to check, just in case it's interfering. Also are you running IE regular or IE (64-bit)? If you go to Start -> Programs there should be two shortcuts, one for 64-bit specifically, try using that one instead.

Other than that, I've got no clues why it would act funny. You could try downloading the 64-bit installer of a different browser like chrome or firefox on your other Vista machine, put it on a USB stick and then install it from there on your Win 7 PC.

Edit: Also if you have a sizeable USB stick or an external HD lying around you could try hooking that up and downloading the stuff which is failing (like EVE and Chrome) onto there to see if it makes any difference. This is assuming you only have a single internal HD, if you have 2 then try downloading your stuff to the other harddrive than the one you used before.

If the downloads work when downloaded onto one drive but not onto another you could be looking at faulty hardware. Unfortunately not all new hardware always works properly, you'll always have the occasional malfunctioning part.

    Amarinth,

I am going to try your suggestions when I get home. I bet that one of those will pan out. I have been self-educating myself in computers lately, ever since I realized not one of the computers in my house would play Star Trek Online above "half-resolution settings," and even then frame rates would drop.... As a result, I have spent a lot of time recently reading about processors/mother boards/RAM, etc., but I really don't know jack about Windows, not since XP anyway, and Vista and 7 are so different.

The UAC is dying tonight if its turned on. I did a little reading on it, and it sounds like a very nasty feature. I may be reinstalling Norton too, because I don't like the idea of my new hardware running around with absolutely no protection on the internet besides built-in firewall and windows defender.

I have no idea what IE is being launched, and that probably has a lot to do with it. I have just been clicking the gigantic "e" on the bottom of the left hand corner and using whatever popped up. I will try downloading with both browsers, in case it is a compatibility issue with the browser itself.

I will post tonight or tomorrow about my success. Thank you to EVERYONE who posted, because you're expanding my knowledge of windows and also giving me new ideas for directions to go in.

I have done everything suggested above. I have disabled UAC, and that has not helped. I have tried running both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of internet explorer. I am disturbed, however, because I went to the site Computer Hope and it identified my THIRTY-TWO BIT version of IE as 64. This makes me wonder if there is not a serious install error with Windows 7 itself.

I mean, consider this: I had to do some kind of phone verification with Microsoft just to get this version of windows to activate. The internet would not accept at face value the product key on the side of my system. My copy of windows does now say that it is activated, but I am still not having a good time.

I cannot even see the pages on EVE online, except for the left hand list of links to different parts of the sites. I am not nerdy enough to know what this means. I am just hoping that I can get ahold of ibuypower tech support tomorrow before I go crazy. This computer is brand-new, a pretty powerful rig, with what I thought was supposed to be a good operating system. I am really, really ****ed off.

At least Star Trek Online looks beautiful.

A buddy of mine even suggested reinstalling Java. I have done that. Still no avail. I do not understand why Itunes will not install, chrome will not even install, or several other sites (all of which seem to use java heavily) will not install. I have no idea how to configure a firewall if there is a problem there, but I have bought several computers in the past and never had problems with these out of the box.
