You have to set it up to use either Winamp or Itunes, then launch either Winamp or Itunes. Once they are launched, you can use the ingame music player to control them. Sadly the UI interface will vanish each time you change maps, so you have to continually re-open it.

Chiming in a bit more here... even with the interface down, it will continue to sync with your music-player. The initial load does let it know that it needs to disable the in-game music, however. After that, though, it will automatically default music to your music-player whether the interface is up or not, until you actually stop the player itself.

In regards to certain other players not being viable... I imagine licensing costs. I mean, it's effectively free advertising right now for Winamp or iTunes.

Nah, WMP support isn't in because I can't figure out the WMP API, and AFAIK the DivX player has no API (feel free to point me to docs re: either).

The music player is a very cool (and unexpected) feature. I wish more games had that sort of option. It's simple, and relatively unobtrusive. If it'd stay active through zoning, it would be even better, but as it stands it's still nice to have.

Yes, now try to divine the needed C code to the ActiveX control installed and running ;-) I lost interest about 5 COM objects deep.

I'll make you a deal. You develop the game, and I'll play it.

    How's that sound? :p

Jokes aside, I guess command line methods would be too unreliable or inelegant?

Like WMP support won't happen any time soon :-P

I've got nothing against it, I just don't have a week to spend on it when it took a day to setup the other two together.

...Hadn't considered that, but given how wonky some of Microsoft's coding can be, I believe it.

Good luck, sir. o7 You may need it.

On a similar note is there any chance we can reskin it to be....smaller? The buttons take up quite a lot of space on a 1280x1024 screen and frankly it's easier to Alt+Tab out of the game to use iTunes. something around 50-75% of the size would make a huge difference.

To also chime in with another suggestion:

I fully understand the issues with MS's C code. Would using an alternative like "Media Player Classic" assist? It's a hell of a lot less bloated than WMP, and less aggravation to have running in the background than iTunes or WinAmp (bloat special edition) :)

It may be because I'm running Winamp5 on Classic... but I haven't noticed any real, particular bloat from it since version 3. That, was a bloated piece of crud, and you are well within your rights to say so there. But, it looks like they fixed at least some of the issues in 5.

...or my machine upgrade did a heck of a lot to make me not notice that sort of thing. Checking system resources, it's only twice as big as mIRC is.

Nowhere near the bloat Firefox is, though.

(Sidenote: Just starting a friendly casual side-discussion while I get breakfast - all questions posed are completely serious and the rest of the post is pre-coffee rambling.)

I love the music player. If I had one request for it, I would ask that the title bar would be a moving tickerboard instead of overflowing off the skin. I'm able to tuck the music player down in the corner under where the interaction buttons (like the "Ops" dialogue button or where the old "warp out" buttons used to be), but occasionally I get the odd song(s) that has/have a massive title and it spills over into my action buttons.

I have no idea about the complexity of what I'm asking but It's not a huge deal, as I can just move it temporarily whenever it does that.

I too have a small request..

Can you make the player so that when you zone you don't have to reactivate it every time?

For example, If I zone from Spacedock to Sector space, I have to go up and manually click the dropdown, select music player and then drag it back to where I keep it on the screen.

Every time I zone this occurs..

And if I might press my luck ever so slightly, can it remember it's last location like the rest of the windows do? Inventory does, so does character window, map, etc. Can this be set to remember where it's placed?

Same problem - thought it was just me that it was affecting as no-one in zone chat knew what I was talking about (most didn't even realise what the music player was).

I can work around with the keyboard media keys but as the tool's there it would be nice if it stayed on screen.

Normally I just alt+tab and open iTunes that way, or Winamp...I haven't had Winamp in so long though lol But I'm sure in game would be easier if it didn't close every zone.

i have a sidewinder keyboard with media buttons. Sometimes microsoft's IKEY software doesn't respond or hangs my system for a moment though. I'd really love if i could pin the music controls so they wouldn't vanish every rezone.

Winamp 3 was what earned the name bloatware because it lost all of the performance benefits with the new additions. Thats why they skipped a version and went straight to Winamp 5. Performance has been a main priority ever since. I've always prefered the AMP over any other media player. So much more versatile.

Official reason for no Winamp 4 from winamp's site:
What happened to Winamp 4? You're not imagining things. Yes, we skipped a version number for the following reasons: a) Winamp 5 combines the best aspects of Winamp 2 and Winamp 3 into one player. Hence Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5! b) Who the hell wants to see a Winamp 4 Skin :P c) We think that a Fibonacci sequence for versioning might be pretty damn cool. d)We improved so much in Winamp 5 that we figured it warranted skipping a version. ;)

are you trying to correct me? As far as I can tell you're supporting what I've said, though I'm not entirely sure. The best feature of 2 was it's performance. If you've ever had to suffer 3, then you'd know it wasn't doing good in that arena. 5 smashed down hard with plenty of optimizations and everything they introduced in 3. The only reason I brought this up was because someone was calling winamp bloatware. It's been a hard struggle for nullsoft to shake that stigma since version 3. They've redeemed themselves long ago though.

Adding to what you said really and supplying Winamp's official statement really.

I tend to Alt/Tab my windows, to be hoenst the Music Player is too big at 1280x1024, any chance we can find a way to scale it somehow? Perhaps being able to drag the size out and in?

Welcome to the wonderful world of programmer-made UI :-) (I made the button art too, ain't it pretty?)

The UI team will get back around to making a better version of the player UI eventually. Of note though, you can control most of the functions from the command line via the /mc command. /mc playpause, /mc previous, /mc next, /mc volume [0-100]. All of those can be used with the /bind to create keybinds too.

Here's some of my suggestions I posted before:
I like the music player even though I have a G15, it's just much more practical. But not enough to use it all the time. Why?
    • Keep window open when zoning out, maybe optional(checkbox
    • Keep window position
    • Stop game music(all the time) or music player(special occasions) on occasion(as not to conflict)
    • Keep it basic (especially so my Winamp Foobar2000 plugin will still work)
    • Set size of Window
    • Display music to other players in info? (just an idea)

Oh yeah I do appreciate that it's hardly an urgency, just a thought provoker perhaps, having the function there's nice anyway! I do use it on occasion!
