Phaser Beam Pistols, to be specific. I know there's Stun and Wide Beam, but I'd like to exclusively use Phasers. This won't be effective unless I find one that Exploits.
Every weapon type has an expose / exploit variation.

Rifles are the best weapon to use for ground fighting. They have the longest range and most damage, assualt weapons used to have a greater amount of targets you could affect with their 2nd option but that is being changed.
I.E
Assualt Energy blast - 7 Targets Max affected
Arcwave assualt - 7 Max
Auto Sweep - 7 Max
Test server
Assualt Energy Blast - 5 Max
Auto Sweep - 4 max
Arcwave - 4 max
Additionally, split beam is being reduced in damage and a cooldown timer is being put on secondary attacks. Thus no more weapon switching between two exploit weapons for lots of damage.
I can see why they want to balance it in ground PvP. I just wish every weapon had every variation so the player could go for looks, not DPS. (Excluding between Mk ranks, of course.)

Drat, drat, drat!!! I have two split beam rifles for this very reason.
The Auto-Targeting Assault Exploit Attack: I haven't checked, but does that mean it will automatically target an exposed target if there are any? Or is it just creative verbage for "more cowbell", er, "more power"?

Just means it will hit X number of targets in it's targetting range (a cone forward of your position), up to the maximum number of targets capable, whether they're exposed or not. Just like Split Beam Rifles do, except with a higher capacity (or somewhat higher next patch).
I really wish they'd have a Beam Exploit pistol as well, but c'est la vie. I make due with outfitting most of my officers with Pistols, except for Tactical Officers that get Rifles or Assault weapons as available.
The CD on exploits may affect me a bit in PVE as well, because I tend to have two exploit weapons just to Exploit multiple targets (I run with so many exposes it's not funny). But, ah well. I'll get over it and probably adjust my setup a bit more (probably dropping an Exploit out for an Expose instead, to help my Tac Officer out more... the kill-stealing wench that she is).
I use a phaser compression pistol because it has an exploit attack.
I do not like the animation of the weapon and wish they had a regular phaser that fires the beam because the compression pistol seems unreliable about firing. I click to shoot and about 1 in 4 times it doesn't seem to actually shoot.
A narrow beam (exploit phaser pistol) would be heavenly. Until then I just use martial arts and my compression pistol with two of my bridge officers using pistols (stun and wide beam) and my tactical officer who has a split beam phaser rifle.
I have never in any game worried about DPS and frankly the day I start worrying about it is the day I stop playing games.
But a standard phaser with an exploit attack or a fix to the compression pistol's jitter rather than attack and I am happy.
Comments
Not always! Compression Pistols knockback/exploit- very similar to sniper rifles.
Yes, but I'm looking for phaser beam pistols. I clarified further in my post.
I think those are only available as drops and not for purchase anywhere.
