Pretty simple. Every time I try to get into the actual game the status bar loads all the way then it just stops. The little sayings at the bottom keep scrolling and the music keeps playing but the game itself is just completely sitting there.
try lowering your world details to 50%. The game may be having trouble loading the amount of graphic information in the card memory, specially if you are using a type of card that uses shared memory in reporting the amount of memory is available. Windows may be slow in releasing memory tothe card and the server heartbeats are timing out on the load time.

Any ideas on what's going on?
I just bought the game and installed it yesterday, after days of reviewing it and finally making a decision to buy.
I was too faced with the exact same problem as you did, at first I thought it's due to my PC below min. required specs of the game, but after hours of tweaking around with the ingame options, I barely manage to solve it, for my PC. I hope this works for you too.
For my ingame video resolution, I'm WAS using 1280 x 1086(aspect ratio 5:4, desktop resolution) and my Aspect Ratio settings ingame WAS Auto, this was what's causing the problem.
This is what I've done to resolve :
1. Start the game in "safe mode". (Launcher popup -> Options menu)
2. When the game brought you to the character selection screen, press "Back" to go to the login page.
3. Click on "Options" located on the lower right hand corner and go to the "Videos" tab.
4. Under "Resolution", choose a comfortable size with "(Aspect Ratio 4:3)" append to it.
5. Under "Screen Size" (or something similar, sorry but I'm in my office at the moment, my gaming PC is at home), instead of "Auto", choose "Aspect Ratio 4:3".
6. Finally, exit and restart the game.
So far the game have not even hang up once for me after this, but the map loading times can really puts me off.
I hope the above helps.
Here's the spec of my decade old machine:
Windows XP sp2
Pentium 4, 2.4GHz (single core)
1.2Mb DDR2 ram
nVidia Geforce 7600GS 256Mb
Sound Blaster Audigy (lol... yes I'm a cheap *******, get over it already... ha ha!!)
C drive = 60Gb HDD
D drive = 500Gb HDD (bought this HDD yesterday, together with the game)
I set most of the graphical options to the lowest and it still looks good.... I was like... "daaaamn". But then, the frame rate is pretty crappy, but I'm not complaining, I'm pretty happy that it even runs without a glitch.
not sure if im having the same issue, i log in through the luancher but it crashes out on the atari load bar, only done this today, been fine before now
There is a problem with the Launcher Auto Update... keeps saying connected one time in a box keeps closing and starting up many times eventually I can log in when it finishes... then I close out try again same cycle...
Dunno what is up with it but I think it will pass...

Crashes out on the Atari bar...hmmm.....
You might want to try going to launcher -> options, then put a check on "Safe mode" and "Windowed" then try starting the game. I tried that too initialy because my pc used to hang/freeze after the Atari loading screen, the one showing the Star Trek logo with the words "Loading" at the bottom. Works for me, hopefully it'll work for you too.

Never experienced that before, but you might want to try the following options :
- upgrade your default browser to IE8 or Firefox 3.6
- "Reset" the settings for your default browser
- Turn off all firewall e.g. Windows firewall and from 3rd party softwares
- Turn off your user account control (UAC), if using Vista and above :P
- Do a Windows update(if all else fails. But if you do, please update properly and let the process be dedicated, which no running of heavy apps or using internet while you're at it. Only update those that labelled "Important", you can ignore the rest.)
Or you might want to try this, I stumbled on this thread and thought it might be useful : http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=140338
Look for the part where the Dev posted, he provided a link to an app that tests your home network.
