So riddle me this: What is the true Exp in STO?

I've seen three kinds of "point rewards" that can be gained: Merits/Honor, Bridge Officer Skillpoints, and Player Skillpoints. Energy Credits are earned through selling items, and Badges are earned from Exploration missions.

For some reason my "experience bar" still moves when I complete missions, and there's actually two lines that move on it (Which I figured out that the one that is in sections is SP spent toward ranks). But since all three of the regular rewards are awarded together when finishing a mission I can't figure out which is the true Exp. The bar doesn't seem to move when fighting and gaining SP after a ship blows up or an enemy dies or Officer SP is gained, or if it does not by much.

I can't figure it out. Sometimes just briefly I do see a number appear and float to my character portrait when a mission is completed. Has anybody figured out which points are the experience in this game, is experience an invisible number we never see, or the game is bugged and Exp is not being displayed even in the Combat/Reward/Reward Minor channels?

Your personal skill points are your exp. They determine your level. One skill point to rule you all...

The big blue bar shows the skill point progression to your next level. It increments as you gain skill points.

The smaller green bar shows the level progression to your next rank. Each time the blue bar fills, you get another level, and the green bar advances another notch. When the green bar fills, you will have enough skill points to get the next rank, if you spend them.

If you mouse over the experience bar... it should clear things up. The main thing determining Grade is the acquisition of skill points, while the second bar (the thin yellow one) is your progress to the next Rank that is gained by spending those skill points. You only get promoted to the next Rank after spending a certain amount of skill points, which usually happens at the end of Grade 10 in your current rank (you'll turn over to Grade 11 in the process, then get a promotion mission that should reset you to Grade 1 of your new rank).

Hope that covered it. o7 Good luck!

Well that begs the question then, why is the sectioned off bar that I thought was SP spent toward Grades inside the current Rank always smaller than the upper portion even when all the earned SP is spent?

You now what I mean right?

    I got

    I
    I

    experience bar, then below that

    I__ __ __ __ __ __ I

    spent SP.

And SP spent (Lower portion) is less than the actual Exp gained (Upper portion) which is really SP gained as you just explained. When I spend all or most of the SP I gained shouldn't the bars be close to equal?

EDIT: Guys I'm not an idiot lol. I know about the mousing over the bar. Now I just don't get why the _ never equal the
    .

Grade progression is for that grade. Rank progression is progress over all ten grades. >>

...Not meaning to come off condescending, mind you, that's completely my bad. :( It's just the way I form responses. My apologies!

It's cool. I realize you're trying to help.

So basically the upper portion (Level ups) advances faster than the lower (Rank ups) and the lower one tracks SP spent and also gained, but when it fills up at level 11, 21, 31, 41 and all SP is spent is when the actual Rankup can occur?

It's just since I've been purposefully staying low level it's hard to figure this out. Ensign to Lt seems to be an exception since we don't have a full lower bar when that happens.

Lets expand the explanation a bit further :

The blue bar at the top is segmented off into 10 segments ( it just makes it easier for you to see how far you are to tell your friends rofl ). When you complete tasks you will gain Skill points to fill this up. Sometimes only 1 point, others 3 ( those guys are like mini bosses rofl ) and at other times 150 or so for a completed mission. When that bar fills completely up the bottom bar will fill a segment of its bar. If you hover over the bar the first 2 comments relate to this bar. You need to GAIN x skill points to progress to next grade.

The yellow bar at the bottom is also segmented off into 10 segments. Each segment denotes your current grade within that rank. Each segment will fill up when you completely fill up the blue bar above it. Once you have filled all of the segments in the yellow bar you will progress to the next rank and both bars will be empty again ready for filling up with the next grade and ranks requirements. The second 2 comments on the hover over info box relate to this bar. You need to SPEND x skill points to progress to the next rank. Even if there isn't anything specifically you might want to put the points in it will not rank you up until you do so.

And of course, while I type all this up I've missed 3 posts that meant it was all clearly understood .. rofl. hey Bron :D

Hi Xrystal. It's the thought that counts. You did make the most detailed post, though.

No. All the lower bar shows is the number of levels toward the next promotion.

(I'm leveling a new char on Tribble and just went from Lt/2 to Lt/3. The lower bar incremented and I didn't spend a single point.)

Hmm so it's a little like CO? There's a big bar and a small bar but it's still all one set of exp for a level.

The bottom bar counts full SP levels toward the next promotion. Got it.

What? Star Trek has features that resemble CO?!

    Preposterous.

It's not like they're designed by the same people.

    Wait a minute...
